Chapter 7 - The Inspection NoticeThe paper in Luca’s hand was a formal commercial property inspection notice.

Emily had pulled it from her mailbox three days ago, right before making the desperate three-hour drive to Chicago. According to the document, a high-end real estate development firm had scheduled the Maple Street house for a final structural and environmental walkthrough the following morning at 9:00 AM—a walkthrough required to finalize a cash sale that had supposedly been greenlit by the property’s primary trustee.

And right at the bottom of the page, beneath the developer’s corporate logo, was a handwritten contact name and direct phone number for scheduling inquiries:

ATTN: V. BELLINI

Luca read the name twice. His eyes lingered on those three handwritten syllables as if he were memorizing coordinates for an airstrike.

Then he slowly lowered the paper, folding it once down the middle with agonizing precision. He raised his gaze to meet Vanessa’s. The last vestiges of human warmth had been completely stripped from his features, leaving behind the cold, calculating executioner who had ruled the city’s underground for thirty years.

“Explain,” he said.

Vanessa’s face had gone past white; it was a sickly, translucent gray. The red silk dress that had looked so magnificent under the foyer lights now looked like a shroud.

“It… it isn't what you think, Luca,” she stammered, taking a stumbling step backward until her shoulder hit the mahogany service bar. “The market—the commercial real estate market downtown took a massive dip this quarter. We needed liquidity for the expansion project into the North Side docks. I was just… I was trying to help consolidate your holdings without bothering you with the administrative overhead!”

“By forging my signature on a trust deed?” Luca asked, his voice deadpan, terrifyingly calm.

“I didn't forge anything!” Vanessa shrieked, panic finally piercing her polished armor. “It was a preliminary agreement! A contingency contract! Nothing was finalized!”

“You scheduled a final inspection on my late wife’s home,” Luca said, his voice rising just enough to vibrate through the floorboards. “You told my pregnant daughter she had three days to throw away her mother’s memory. And you did it behind my back while planning a wedding in my house.”

He didn't yell. He didn't curse. He simply turned his head slightly toward the shadows near the service doors, where two large, stone-faced security guards in identical black suits stood at attention.

“Take Mrs. Bellini’s things from the master suite,” Luca ordered, his eyes never leaving Vanessa. “Put them in her car at the front gate. And make sure she understands she is never to set foot on Moretti property again.”

Vanessa let out a strangled, furious gasp. “You can’t do this to me, Luca! I made you! I managed your public image! I kept the board off your back! Without me, you’re just an aging thug living in the past!”

Luca didn't even blink. He raised a single finger, and the two security guards stepped forward, their massive hands closing firmly around Vanessa’s arms. She fought like a cornered animal, screaming obscenities that shattered the remaining shreds of high-society decorum, kicking her gold heels against the marble as they dragged her backward out of the grand dining room and down the long corridor toward the exit.

The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind her, cutting off her voice mid-scream.

Silence descended upon the room once more—a heavy, trembling silence filled with thirty terrified guests who couldn't figure out whether to finish their wine or run for the parking lot.

Luca didn't care about them. He didn't even look at the tables.

He turned back to his daughter.

Emily was staring at him, her chest heaving, the remaining tears drying on her cheeks as the monumental weight of the last hour settled over her.

Before Luca could speak, Emily grabbed his arm with both hands, her eyes wide with a sudden, chilling realization.

“Dad,” she said, her voice dropping to an urgent, frightened whisper. “There’s something else.”

Luca looked down at her, his expression softening instantly. “What is it, baby?”

“Two men came to the house yesterday,” Emily said rapidly, the memory flooding back. “They weren't city inspectors. They looked like… like corporate fixers. They had clipboards and blueprints.”

Luca’s eyes narrowed. “What did they want?”

“They kept asking about the basement,” Emily said, her breath fogging slightly in the cool air near the doors. “Specifically, they kept asking about Mom’s locked steel cabinet in the corner of the fruit cellar.”

Vanessa’s voice seemed to echo back into the room from the hallway: They didn't care about the furniture.

Emily pointed toward the front doors through which Vanessa had just been dragged. “They didn't care about the house, Dad. They didn't care about the oak trees or the square footage.”

She looked up into his eyes with absolute terror.

“They only wanted the key to Mom’s cabinet.”
