Chapter 7 - The Newport VowsThe wedding day arrived under a canopy of flawless, cloudless blue skies.

The cliffside estate in Newport was a masterpiece of coastal elegance, draped in cascading white hydrangeas, lush greenery, and soft fairy lights that flickered as dusk began to settle over the Atlantic Ocean.
Only eighty guests were in attendance—an intimate gathering of our closest confidants, elite architectural colleagues, and loyal friends who had stood by us through thick and thin.
As I stood in the private bridal suite overlooking the crashing waves below, looking at my reflection in the floor-to-ceiling mirror, I could hardly recognize the woman staring back.
The silk and lace gown I wore was breathtaking—a custom design featuring delicate cap sleeves, a flowing minimalist train, and a structured bodice that radiated quiet confidence. My hair was swept back in soft, elegant waves, secured with a diamond-encrusted hairpin Julian had gifted me that morning.
There was no fear in my eyes. No lingering shadow of self-doubt. Just radiant, unshakeable joy.
The soft chime of the suite door interrupted my thoughts. I turned to see Julian standing in the doorway, impeccably dressed in a custom Tom Ford tuxedo, his dark hair neatly styled, his piercing eyes softening the moment they landed on me.
"My God, Claire," Julian whispered, stepping into the room and closing the door behind him. He walked over slowly, as if afraid I might vanish like a mirage, and gently cupped my face in his hands. "You take my breath away."
I leaned into his warm palms, smiling up at him. "You clean up pretty well yourself, Mr. Mercer."
"Are you ready?" he asked softly, his thumb tracing my cheekbone. "Are you ready to start our forever?"
"More than ready," I replied, covering his hand with mine.
The ceremony was breathtaking. As we stood beneath a floral arch overlooking the ocean, reciting vows we had written ourselves, every word felt like a sacred promise of protection, equality, and unbreakable love. When Julian slipped the antique diamond ring back onto my finger and kissed me in front of our cheering guests, the applause felt like a warm embrace from the universe itself.
The reception that followed was a masterclass in elegance and warmth. There was no stiff, aristocratic pretense—just exquisite food, flowing champagne, heartfelt speeches from Marcus Vance and our closest colleagues, and laughter that echoed long into the starlit night.
As the band transitioned into a slow, romantic melody, Julian pulled me close onto the candlelit dance floor.
I rested my head against his shoulder, breathing in the familiar scent of cedar and rain, feeling the gentle sway of the music.
"Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Mercer," Julian murmured against my hair.
I smiled, tightening my arms around his neck. "I was just thinking about that Thanksgiving dinner in Greenwich. About how different my life would look if you hadn't walked into that kitchen."
Julian pulled back slightly, looking down into my eyes with fierce, absolute devotion. "I didn't save you, Claire. You saved yourself the moment you decided you deserved better than the crumbs they threw at you. I just gave you a front-row seat to watch them starve."
May you like
I laughed softly, pressing my lips to his in a lingering, tender kiss.
The past was gone. The shadows had melted away. And as the waves crashed against the rocky shore below, I knew that our future was as bright and limitless as the ocean stretching out before us.
