Chapter 7 - The Walk of Shame

The double doors parted completely, held open by two private security officers wearing the discreet silver pins of Sterling Horizon Executive Protection.

I walked into the boardroom.

I was dressed in an ivory double-breasted power suit, tailored with razor-sharp precision. My high heels clicked against the polished hardwood with a steady, rhythmic cadence that sounded like the ticking of a doomsday clock.

Beside me walked Harper Ross, carrying a sleek digital tablet, followed by three senior corporate turnaround attorneys from Kirkland & Ellis—the fiercest restructuring lawyers on Wall Street.

Eleanor gasped, recoiling into her chair as if she had seen a ghost.

Chloe jumped to her feet, her hands trembling with rage. “You! How dare you show your face here? You ruined my brother! You threw my family out into the street!”

Harper didn't even blink. She raised her hand, and the two security guards stepped forward, blocking Chloe’s path with imposing, immovable presence.

“Sit down, Miss Vance,” Harper said smoothly. “Or you will be escorted from this building by city police for criminal trespassing.”

“Criminal trespassing?” Chloe shrieked, looking at her father. “Father, tell them! This is our building!”

Richard didn't speak. He couldn't speak. He sat frozen, staring at me as I reached the head of the conference table.

I didn't take a seat. I stood tall, placing my hands lightly on the polished redwood, looking down at the broken remnants of the Vance dynasty.

“You’re mistaken, Chloe,” I said softly. “This building was owned by the 300 River Drive Real Estate Trust. That trust was dissolved at 10:00 AM this morning following a verified covenant breach. As of twelve minutes ago, Sterling Horizon Holdings is the sole legal owner of this tower, this floor, and the chair you are currently sitting in.”

Eleanor began to weep softly, burying her face in her trembling hands. “Clara... please. We are family. You married Arthur! In the eyes of God, you are one flesh!”

I looked down at the matriarch with eyes as cold as arctic ice.

“Family?” I asked, my voice dangerously calm. “When your son struck me across the face for asking his sister to wash a dish, where was the family, Eleanor? When you calmly buttered your toast while I stood bleeding on your kitchen floor, where was the family?”

Eleanor flinched, shrinking back into her seat.

“When Chloe poured hot coffee onto the floor and ordered me to clean it like a dog, none of you spoke about family,” I continued, my voice slicing through the silent room. “You spoke about power. You spoke about authority. You believed I was a defenseless woman with nowhere to run, someone you could break and mold into a domestic servant while you spent my money to sustain your dying vanity.”

Richard slowly lifted his head. His eyes were hollow, defeated, stripped of every shred of the arrogance that had defined him for decades.

“What do you want, Clara?” Richard croaked, his voice barely audible. “You’ve taken our home. You’ve put my son in county jail without bail. You’ve frozen our accounts. What else is there to take?”

I signaled to Harper.

Harper slid a thick document across the mahogany table, stopping it directly in front of Richard.

On the cover, in bold black typography, were the words:

**UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER AND ASSET CONVEYANCE AGREEMENT.**

“This document contains the terms of your survival,” I said. “You will sign over all remaining operational shares of Vance Hospitality to Sterling Horizon Holdings for the nominal sum of one dollar. In exchange, Sterling Horizon will assume the company’s forty-two million dollars in debt, preventing the immediate liquidation of the business and saving the jobs of the seven hundred innocent employees whose livelihoods you put at risk to finance your yachts.”

Richard’s hands shook as he looked at the document. “And... and what happens to us?”

“You will surrender all corporate credit cards, all company vehicles, and all claims to executive pensions,” I replied coldly. “You, Eleanor, and Chloe will sign complete non-disclosure agreements, accompanied by public letters of apology detailing your complicity in Arthur’s domestic abuse.”

“And Arthur?” Eleanor cried out, grasping at the table. “What about my boy? Will you drop the charges against Arthur?”

I looked Eleanor directly in the eyes.

May you like

“Never.”
