Chapter 4 - The Front Desk ConfrontationThe lobby of the George V boutique hotel was a masterpiece of crystal, polished mahogany, and fresh white orchids. But the atmosphere at the front desk was rapidly deteriorating into a disaster.

Elena and Richard Castillo stood shoulder-to-shoulder before the mahogany concierge counter, projecting an air of aristocratic outrage that completely failed to intimidate the towering, impeccably groomed front desk manager, Monsieur Laurent.

"I am telling you, there has been a severe mistake," Elena insisted, leaning forward and tapping her manicured finger against the marble counter. "The reservation was made by our daughter, Valerie Castillo. She is a senior corporate executive in the United States. She is simply having a childish emotional episode. You cannot possibly expect us to pack our bags over a domestic spat!"

Monsieur Laurent maintained a polite, impenetrable expression, though his eyes were cold.

"Madame, I am sympathetic to family disputes, but our policy is absolute," Laurent replied smoothly, his accented English precise. "The credit card guarantee provided at the time of booking has been formally revoked by the cardholder, accompanied by a signed legal declaration of unauthorized third-party usage. Furthermore, Ms. Valerie Castillo has explicitly instructed us in writing that she assumes no financial liability for your stay."

Richard stepped in, puffing out his chest with the bluster that usually cowed bank tellers and minor suppliers back home. "Listen to me, young man. I am the head of this family. I am guaranteeing you that the bill will be settled—once we return to the States and sort out our banking wires. Put it on my account."

Laurent raised an eyebrow. "Very well, sir. What is the routing number and banking institution for your corporate or personal account? We can run a preliminary wire authorization right now."

Richard blinked, hesitating for a fraction of a second. His primary business account was currently tied up in pending litigation, and his secondary lines of credit had been maxed out weeks ago to fund his lifestyle. "Well... international wires take forty-eight hours to clear. You can't expect us to sit here waiting—"

"Without a valid credit card authorization with sufficient available balance, or an immediate cash deposit covering the full duration of the fourteen-night stay plus incidentals—totaling approximately €9,200—we cannot permit you to retain the keys to Suite 402," Laurent stated flatly. He folded his hands over the counter. "Those are the hotel's terms."

Danielle stepped forward, tears of pure mortification welling in her eyes. "Do you know who we are? My father is a prominent businessman! I just graduated with honors! You are treating us like common criminals!"

"We are treating you as guests without a valid form of payment," Laurent corrected calmly. "Please settle the account or return your electronic room keys by twelve noon. Otherwise, hotel security will be forced to assist you with your luggage."

Before Elena could launch into another tirade, her phone buzzed loudly in her hand.

Elena snatched it up, hoping against hope that Valerie had finally caved, that her frantic texts had worked. But it wasn't Valerie.

It was an email notification from the domestic airline carrier handling their return flights.

Elena’s eyes scanned the text of the email, and the color drained entirely from her face. Her knees wobbled slightly, forcing her to grab the edge of the mahogany desk for support.

"Richard," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

"What is it now?" Richard groaned, rubbing his temples.

"Our return flights... they've been cancelled."

Richard stared at her. "Cancelled? What do you mean cancelled? I booked those months ago!"

"Not booked by us—booked under Valerie’s corporate travel rewards account," Elena stammered, her voice rising in panic. "She didn't just cancel her ticket at the airport yesterday. Because she was the primary account holder for the corporate travel block, she pulled the companion status and reward vouchers off all four tickets. The airline says our return seats are gone, and to rebook economy tickets back to Atlanta right now will cost over four thousand dollars out of pocket!"

The lobby seemed to spin around them.

Four thousand dollars for return flights. Nine thousand two hundred euros for the hotel. No credit cards that worked. No daughter to bail them out.

For the first time in their lives, the Castillo family was face-to-face with the sheer, unadulterated reality of their own insolvency. And the woman who had built the safety net beneath them had finally cut the cord.
