Chapter 6 - A Storm on the Coast

Three weeks after the afternoon in the garden, the calm that had settled over Willow Crest was tested by the sudden arrival of summer squalls off the Atlantic. Thick, bruise-colored clouds rolled over the Hudson Valley, turning the afternoon sky into an eerie twilight.

In the master wing, Marcus was on an emergency conference call with his maritime operations director in Rotterdam. A major cargo freighter had suffered an engine room fire off the coast of Ireland; no lives were lost, but the logistical fallout threatened to cost Ellery Maritime twenty million dollars in supply chain penalties.

Downstairs in the library, Nora was reading a picture book with Lily when the first crack of thunder rattled the heavy leaded-glass windows.

Even with her hearing devices, Lily couldn't perceive the sharp crack of lightning, but she felt the deep, bone-shaking vibration travel through the limestone floor. Her small body went rigid. The colored pencils slipped from her hands.

Nora immediately set the book aside. *VIBRATION. SKY ANGRY, BUT HOUSE SAFE.*

Lily’s eyes were wide with terror. She had developed an intense fear of storms during the long months of her silence—a time when thunder was an invisible, violent shaking that rattled her bed without warning or explanation.

She scrambled into Nora’s lap, burying her head against Nora’s neck, her small hands clutching Nora’s sweater so hard the fabric stretched.

The door flew open. Marcus stood there, his phone still clutched in his hand, his tie loosened. He had abandoned the Rotterdam crisis the moment he heard the thunder shake the rafters.

"Lily?" he called out.

Lily didn't turn. She was trembling, hyperventilating in small, shallow gasps.

Marcus dropped his phone onto a side table and knelt beside them on the carpet. "Is she having an episode?"

"She's terrified of the low-frequency vibrations," Nora explained softly, stroking Lily’s hair while keeping her voice level. "Before her hearing aids, she couldn't understand what made the floor shake. To her, the entire world felt like it was collapsing."

Marcus’s jaw worked. The phantom guilt of the past year threatened to rise again, but Nora caught his eye and shook her head firmly.

"Don't retreat into guilt, Marcus," she commanded gently. "Be her anchor. Put your hands over hers."

Marcus nodded. He reached out, sliding his broad, warm hands over Lily’s trembling fingers. He gently pulled her hands away from Nora’s collar and placed them flat against his own broad chest.

Lily blinked, her tear-filled eyes looking up into his.

Marcus looked at Nora for guidance. Nora quickly demonstrated the signs: *FEEL. PAPA HEART. STRONG.*

Marcus repeated the signs, his movements steady and confident now. Then he pressed Lily’s small palms flat against his sternum. *FEEL ME,* he signed with one hand while holding hers with the other. *THUNDER SHAKES THE FLOOR. BUT PAPA HEART IS STRONGER.*

He took deep, exaggerated breaths, allowing Lily to feel the rhythmic, steady rise and fall of his chest. He began to hum—a deep, resonant baritone that sent comforting vibrations straight through his ribcage into her hands. It was an old lullaby Clara used to sing.

Gradually, Lily’s breathing slowed. The frantic shaking in her shoulders subsided. She rested her forehead against Marcus’s collarbone, closing her eyes, focusing entirely on the steady thrum of her father’s heartbeat.

Outside, the rain lashed the glass with furious intensity, but inside the library, the world was completely still.

Marcus looked over Lily’s dark head at Nora. His eyes were bright with unshed tears, but for the first time, they were tears of profound connection, not regret.

"Thank you," he mouthed silently across the space between them.

May you like

Nora smiled, her heart swelling with an emotion so deep it frightened her. She signed back: *YOU DID IT. YOU ARE HER FATHER.*
