Chapter 5 - The Subterranean Stand-OffThe heavy metallic echo of Victoria Vescari’s stilettos descending the spiral staircase sounded like a hammer striking an anvil. Each step brought her closer to the dimly lit basement cell where Leo slumped against the concrete wall.

"Maya, get behind the server racks," Julian’s urgent voice hissed through the tiny earpiece in my ear, his tone stripped of its usual unshakable calm. "She’s not alone. My tablet feed shows she has two heavies from the Dock 4 enforcer crew with suppressed pistols."
"I am not leaving my brother," I whispered back fiercely, keeping my voice low as I pressed myself flat against the cold stone wall beside the reinforced glass partition.
"If you die down there, Leo dies with you," Julian countered, his voice sharp and absolute. "Listen to me, Maya. I am overriding the estate’s main power grid from my study. When I cut the lights, the biometric locks on the secondary doors will default to manual fail-safe for precisely seven seconds. That is your only window."
Above us, Victoria’s voice drifted down, dripping with theatrical amusement.
"Come out, little rat," she called out, her heels stopping at the bottom of the stairs. "I know you're down here. It's quite pathetic, really. You thought you could play detective in a house of wolves, and instead, you walked right into the slaughterhouse."
Two shadows stretched long and distorted across the concrete floor as her enforcers fanned out, their weapons drawn and ready.
I held my breath, my fingers curled into tight fists. My muscles coiled like springs, every fiber of my lifeguard training preparing for explosive movement.
Three... two... one...
Suddenly, the harsh fluorescent tubes overhead flickered violently and died, plunging the entire carriage house basement into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
"What the hell—!" an enforcer cursed above me.
Clack!
A heavy pneumatic latch somewhere along the wall hissed open. The manual fail-safe had triggered. Without a second thought, I lunged forward in the dark, slammed my shoulder against the auxiliary release lever of Cell 4, and threw my entire body weight into the heavy steel door.
It swung inward with a metallic groan.
"Leo! Grab my hand!" I whispered urgently, diving into the cell.
"Maya?!" my brother choked out, his voice weak and raspy.
I caught his arm, pulling him upward just as a bright beam of tactical flashlight pierced the darkness from the top of the stairs.
"Over there! Cell 4!" Victoria screamed.
Bang! Bang!
May you like
The deafening roar of a silenced pistol echoed off the concrete walls, the bullet chewing into the stone floor inches from my boots, sending sparks flying.
"Move, move, move!" I shouted, hauling Leo to his feet and dragging him out of the cell into the shadowed maze of server racks just as automatic gunfire shredded the air behind us.
