Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Vances

The county holding facility smelled of cheap disinfectant, rust, and defeat.

In the fluorescent-lit visiting room, Victoria Vance sat behind a thick sheet of scratched acrylic glass. Her tailored silk blouse was gone, replaced by a drab orange jumpsuit that was two sizes too large. Her silver hair, usually immaculately coiffed, was greasy, tangled, and pinned back with plastic barrettes.

Across from her sat Dominic, wearing an identical orange uniform. Because they were co-defendants in the financial and domestic investigation, their joint counsel—a tired public defender assigned after their private attorneys resigned over unpaid retainers—had arranged a fifteen-minute conference.

“Dominic!” Victoria wept, pressing her trembling, manicured hands against the glass. “You have to get us out of here! The women in my cell… they’re monsters! They laughed at me! They took my shoes! Tell your friends at the country club to post bail!”

Dominic stared at his mother through the glass. His eyes were completely hollow, sunken deep into dark purple hollows.

“There is no bail, Mother,” Dominic said, his voice completely flat. “The judge declared you a flight risk. Attempted murder with premeditation isn't eligible for bond in this district.”

Victoria’s eyes widened in horror. “Attempted murder?! That is a lie! I am a lady! I am a Vance! I simply gave her a nudge! She provoked me, Dominic! You know how insolent she was!”

“The video showed everything, Mother,” Dominic whispered, an edge of cold hatred finally creeping into his voice. “You pushed her. You watched her bleed out. And you walked away.”

“She was a nobody!” Victoria shrieked, banging her palms against the divider. “She stole your company! She stole my house!”

“She didn't steal anything,” Dominic said, leaning forward until his forehead touched the plastic barrier. “She owned it. She bought the house two years ago to keep you from being evicted by the bank. She saved my company with thirty million dollars of her own money. She never told us because she wanted us to love her for who she was.”

Dominic let out a broken, wheezing laugh. “And we treated her like a dog. You pushed her down the stairs. You killed my child. My *only* child.”

Victoria froze, her lips trembling. “Dominic… you don’t understand…”

“No, I understand perfectly,” Dominic said. “The public defender told me this morning that the state is offering a plea deal. If I testify against you at the criminal trial—if I confirm that you had a history of threatening Audrey—they’ll drop the accessory charges against me.”

Victoria gasped, clutching her chest as if she had been stabbed. “You wouldn't dare! I am your mother! I raised you! I sacrificed everything for your status!”

“What status, Mother?” Dominic asked, looking down at his orange sleeves. “Look at us. We are convicts. We are beggars. You took my son from me. You took my life.”

Dominic stood up from the stainless steel stool.

“I signed the plea deal twenty minutes ago.”

“Dominic! No! Dominic, come back here!” Victoria screamed, slamming her fists against the acrylic divider until two burly female corrections officers grabbed her by the arms and dragged her backward through the iron security door, her shrieks echoing down the concrete corridors.

Dominic walked back to his cell, feeling nothing at all.

Meanwhile, three miles away, a different kind of justice was unfolding in the executive offices of Kane Dynamics.

Marcus Kane sat behind his mahogany desk, reviewing the acquisition paperwork for Vance Construction’s liquidated municipal contracts. Sitting across from him was Paige, dressed in a new designer dress, admiring a three-carat diamond ring Marcus had casually bought her the day before.

“I’m telling you, Marcus,” Paige smiled, crossing her legs, “once the Vance bankruptcy clears, the city council will hand the waterfront development contract straight to you. Dominic’s files had all their architectural designs pre-approved.”

Before Marcus could answer, his secretary’s voice buzzed through the intercom, sounding panicked. “Mr. Kane, the federal marshals are here. With representatives from the Securities and Exchange Commission.”

Marcus frowned, shooting to his feet. “What?”

The heavy doors to his office burst open.

Leading the team was an impeccably dressed federal investigator, flanked by four armed marshals and Sophia Sterling.

“Marcus Kane?” the lead investigator announced. “I have a federal warrant for the seizure of all Kane Dynamics servers, hard drives, and financial records.”

Marcus puffed out his chest, stepping forward aggressively. “On what authority? You can’t just barge into my corporate office without cause!”

“The authority comes from a comprehensive whistleblower disclosure submitted by Sovereign Crest Holdings,” the investigator replied, sliding a thick federal indictment onto the desk.

“It appears that for the past eighteen months, your firm has been engaged in industrial espionage, bid-rigging, and illegal wiretapping targeting Vance Construction. Furthermore, we have bank records proving that you transferred over six hundred thousand dollars in illicit consulting fees to an offshore account registered to Ms. Paige Caldwell.”

Paige gasped, dropping her designer handbag. Her face went bone white. “What?! Those were… those were personal gifts!”

“Those were corporate kickbacks for stolen trade secrets, Ms. Caldwell,” Sophia Sterling said, stepping forward with a cool, razor-sharp smile. “Which constitutes wire fraud, corporate espionage, and federal conspiracy.”

Two marshals stepped up behind Paige, pulling her arms behind her back.

“Marcus! Do something!” Paige screamed, struggling against the cuffs. “Tell them I didn't know!”

Marcus backed away, raising his hands, his arrogant demeanor instantly dissolving into pure self-preservation. “I don't know what she’s talking about! She approached me! She offered the information! I had nothing to do with this!”

Paige stared at Marcus in utter disbelief. “You coward! You told me you loved me! I’m pregnant with your baby!”

“Then you can give birth in a federal correctional facility,” Sophia said calmly. “Because Kane Dynamics’ assets have been frozen under federal racketeering statutes, and Mr. Kane is joining you in processing.”

May you like

As the marshals clamped the cuffs on Marcus Kane’s wrists, Paige dissolved into hysterical sobs, realizing too late that the web of deceit she had spun to secure a life of luxury had become the very cage that would lock her away for a decade.
