Chapter 5 - The Web Unravels (1,800 Words)By noon, the federal dragnet had expanded far beyond the Miller estate.

The cascading collapse of the Miller Corporation sent shockwaves through the entire state’s political and economic landscape. News vans from national networks crowded the perimeter of the county courthouse, broadcasting live footage of federal investigators carting out dozens of heavy steel boxes filled with seized financial ledgers, hard drives, and illicit property deeds.
In the county prosecutor’s office, District Attorney Vance sat paralyzed at his desk, staring blankly at his office television as an anchor reported on the sudden, unannounced arrest of three sitting municipal judges on charges of bribery and systemic corruption.
The heavy oak door to his office burst open without warning. Two armed federal special agents in dark tactical windbreakers stepped into the room, flanked by an officer carrying a pristine federal arrest warrant.
“District Attorney Thomas Vance?” the lead agent demanded, his voice crisp and authoritative.
Vance slowly stood up, his hands hovering over his desk. “This is an outrage! I am an elected constitutional officer of this county! You cannot simply barge into my office without—”
“Sit down, Mr. Vance,” the agent interrupted, slapping the warrant down onto the polished mahogany desk. “You are being placed under federal arrest for conspiracy, obstruction of justice, accepting illegal bribes from the Miller Corporation, and systematic civil rights violations under Color of Law.”
Vance’s face drained of all color. He looked down at the warrant, noting the classification stamp at the top corner—Directorate of Special Operations, Department of Defense Oversight Division.
“Defense Oversight?” Vance whispered, his voice trembling. “What does the military have to do with local county prosecution?”
“Ask Captain Alexander Sinclair,” the agent replied coldly, gesturing toward the door. “Cuffs on.”
Meanwhile, back at Saint Jude Memorial Hospital, the fourth-floor corridor remained a fortress of absolute calm amidst the raging storm outside.
I stood beside Rosalie’s bed, gently adjusting the IV drip line while reviewing a fresh medical update on my encrypted tablet. Dr. Higgins walked into the room, holding a newly printed set of neurological scan results, a look of profound astonishment written across his face.
“Captain Sinclair,” Dr. Higgins began, his voice laced with disbelief. “I... I honestly don't know how to explain this, but the latest intracranial pressure scan just came back. The swelling in her brain has begun to recede at a rate three times faster than expected.”
I looked up from the tablet. “Is she responding to treatment?”
“Better than that,” Dr. Higgins said, stepping closer to the monitors. “Her autonomic responses are stabilizing. Her vital signs are plateauing in a normal range. It’s as if her body has suddenly found the strength to fight back. In all my years of medicine, I’ve rarely seen a recovery trajectory this aggressive once trauma has reached this severity.”
I placed my hand gently on Rosalie’s forehead, feeling the faint, steady warmth of life returning to her skin. “She’s a fighter, Doctor. She’s stronger than anyone in this county realizes.”
My secure satellite phone vibrated in my tactical pocket. I pulled it out, stepped toward the window overlooking the hospital courtyard, and pressed the receiver to my ear.
“Overlord Actual.”
“Captain,” Ghost-Actual’s voice came through crisp and clear. “The primary phase is complete. All key targets—including the district attorney, the corrupt judges, and the senior executives of the Miller Corporation—are currently in federal custody. Financial audits are locked in, and the local police department has been placed under temporary federal receivership.”
“What about Catherine Miller?” I asked, my eyes scanning the courtyard below where federal agents were cordoning off the perimeter.
“Currently detained at her residence pending transport to the federal detention facility in Virginia. She demanded to speak with you before she was loaded into the transport vehicle.”

A cold, deliberate silence hung in the air for a moment.
“Tell her I’ll be there shortly,” I replied. “I have a few parting words for my mother-in-law.”
