Chapter 8 - The Ashes of GreedThe preliminary federal arraignment took place on Friday morning in Courtroom 4B of the Birch Bay Federal Courthouse.

The gallery was packed with local reporters, curious onlookers, and financial journalists eager to cover the spectacular downfall of one of Indianapolis’s most prominent real estate families.
When David and Chloe were led into the courtroom by federal marshals, the contrast between their former arrogance and their current reality was staggering. Gone were the tailored designer suits, the platinum jewelry, and the smug, untouchable grins. They both wore standard, coarse orange jumpsuit uniforms, their wrists and ankles shackled in heavy steel chains.
Chloe kept her face buried in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably into her shoulder, while David stared blankly ahead, refusing to look at the gallery.
I sat in the front row right beside my father, who walked into the courtroom with the help of a sturdy cane, holding his head high, flanked by two federal bailiffs.
As District Judge Harrison took the bench, the courtroom instantly quieted.
“We are here for the formal arraignment and bail determination in United States v. David Vance and Chloe Vance,” Judge Harrison announced, adjusting his spectacles. “The charges include federal wire fraud, interstate extortion, conspiracy, and systematic elder exploitation resulting in severe physical injury.”
David’s court-appointed public defender stood up, clearing his throat nervously. “Your Honor, my clients enter a plea of not guilty to all charges. Furthermore, we are requesting release on modest personal recognizance bonds, given that they have deep local ties to the community and no prior criminal records—”
“Denied,” Judge Harrison interrupted flatly, his voice ringing with absolute authority.
The public defender blinked in shock. “Your Honor, respectfully—”
“Counsel, save your breath,” Judge Harrison cut him off, leaning forward over the bench. “I have reviewed the federal forensic audit, the medical documentation of an elderly victim beaten with a blunt object, and the extensive paper trail of systematic financial plunder. The respondents represent an extreme flight risk, a clear and present danger to the community, and a demonstrated threat to vulnerable senior citizens.”
He slammed his gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack.
Clack.
“Both defendants are remanded to federal custody without bond pending trial. Next case.”
As the marshals yanked David and Chloe to their feet, dragging them away toward the holding cells, Chloe cast one final, desperate, venomous look toward the gallery—not at the judge, but straight at me. Her lips mouthed a silent, furious curse before the heavy oak doors slammed shut, swallowing them whole.

I didn't flinch. I simply turned to my father, smiled softly, and looped my arm through his.
“Come on, Dad,” I said. “Let’s go home.”
