Chapter 6 - THE FALL OF DONNA

While Derek was being handcuffed in the third-floor corridor of St. Jude Children’s Hospital, a second squad car was already parked in our driveway.

Donna had been sitting on our front porch, sipping iced tea from my favorite crystal tumbler, waiting for Derek to return with the news that I had been committed to the hospital’s psychiatric unit.

Instead, two county deputies walked up the front steps.

Later, our neighbor, Mrs. Gable, sent me the video from her Ring doorbell. Donna’s screeching had echoed across the entire neighborhood.

*"Get your filthy hands off me! Do you know who I am? I am Donna Vance! My son is an executive! My daughter-in-law is a lunatic who is trying to frame me! Derek! Derek, where are you?!"*

The deputies hadn't said a word. They simply read her Miranda rights, cuffed her behind her floral cardigan, and loaded her into the back of the cruiser.

By 6:00 P.M., both Derek and Donna were sitting in separate interrogation rooms at the county jail.

Claire arrived at the hospital with a briefcase full of emergency legal filings.

"The magistrate signed the emergency protective orders," Claire said, dropping a thick stack of stamped legal papers onto the rolling table. "Donna is barred from coming within one thousand feet of you, Molly, and Sadie for life. Derek is barred pending the outcome of the criminal trial."

"What about the custody?" I asked, my voice steady, though my heart was pounding against my ribs.

"Emergency sole legal and physical custody has been granted to you," Claire said, a triumphant smile touching her face. "Dr. Shah’s medical report, combined with the nanny cam audio and the forensic bank audits, made it a slam dunk. The judge was so disgusted by Derek’s complicity that he ordered an immediate freeze on all joint marital assets and gave you exclusive use of the marital residence."

I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding since 4:17 that morning.

"What about the stolen forty-five thousand?"

"Grand larceny charges are being drafted by the District Attorney right now," Claire said. "Because Derek transferred joint funds to Donna’s business entity to satisfy personal debts without your signature while you were incapacitated post-surgery, it qualifies as financial exploitation and marital fraud. The state is seizing Heritage Oak Properties’ remaining corporate assets to hold in escrow for your restitution."

I looked down at Molly. She was sleeping peacefully now, her breathing soft and regular, free of the terrifying wheeze that had haunted my morning. Sadie was nestled beside her, their tiny hands instinctively reaching out until their fingers brushed against each other.

"They underestimated me, Claire," I whispered.

"They thought you were weak because you were tired," Claire replied gently. "They forgot that a mother protecting her babies is the most dangerous force on earth."
