Chapter 5 - The Glass House CrumblesThe chaos in the lobby was broadcast directly to my phone as Marcus kept the line open.

I sat beside Lily’s hospital bed, listening to the magnificent, expensive illusion my family had built over the last ten years shatter into a thousand unfixable pieces.

“Get your hands off me!” Ashley shrieked over the phone. “Do you know who I am?! I’m Ashley Reed! Today is my wedding day! Carter, tell them to stop!”

“Don't touch my daughter!” my mother Victoria screamed in the background. “She’s a bride! This is a outrage! Carter, do something!”

“Shut your mouth, Victoria!” Arthur Montgomery’s sharp voice cut through her hysterics like a knife. “You and your husband lied to my face! You told me your eldest daughter was a drug addict living in a shelter! You let me pay two million dollars to rent an island that belongs to her!”

“We... we didn't know!” my father Richard stammered frantically, his voice weak and desperate. “Claire never told us she owned Reed Global! She kept it from us!”

“Because she knew what kind of parasites you are!” Arthur sneered. “Security! Escort the entire Reed family off this property immediately! Cancel the catering! Cancel the reception! We are done here!”

“Carter! Please!” Ashley sobbed loudly, her manicured facade completely evaporating into pathetic groveling. “I love you! It was an accident! The little brat was going to ruin my two-thousand-dollar veil!”

“You pushed an eight-year-old girl off a balcony?” Carter’s voice was filled with deep, sickening disgust. “You monster. Get away from me.”

The heavy metal click of handcuffs snapping shut echoed through the speaker.

“Ashley Reed, you are under arrest for second-degree felony child endangerment and aggravated assault,” the local sheriff’s voice announced calmly. “You have the right to remain silent...”

“Mom! Dad! Help me!” Ashley screamed as she was dragged down the marble steps of the resort entrance.

My mother began wailing hysterically, her dramatic cries echoing across the courtyard until the sound faded as security pushed them past the outer gates of the estate.

Marcus came back on the line. “Ms. Reed, the villa has been completely cleared of guests. The Montgomery family is departing on their private yacht. Sheriff Miller requests your presence at the precinct tomorrow morning to file your formal statement.”

“Thank you, Marcus,” I said softly. “Lock down the island. Nobody sets foot on that property without my explicit written permission.”

“Understood, boss.”

I hung up the phone and looked back at my daughter. Lily had fallen fast asleep, her tiny hand resting safely in mine, her chest rising and falling in a rhythmic, peaceful motion.

The door to the hospital room opened quietly, and my head of security, Vance, walked in carrying a steaming cup of tea and a thick leather folder.

“How is she doing, boss?” Vance asked in a low voice.

“She’s going to be okay,” I said, taking the tea. “What’s in the folder?”

Vance placed the folder on the bedside table. “A complete financial audit of your parents’ assets, as well as Ashley’s personal accounts. You asked me to prepare this two weeks ago when they first submitted the venue request.”

I opened the folder, scanning the pages of unpaid debts, fraudulent loan applications, and maxed-out credit cards.

“They were relying on this wedding to save them,” I observed, a cold smile touching my lips. “Ashley promised her creditors that the Montgomery family would clear her six-figure personal debts the moment the marriage certificate was signed.”

“And now?” Vance asked.

“Now,” I said, closing the folder with a firm snap, “they are going to pay back every single cent they owe.”
