Chapter 10 - The Sterling Standard(Word count target: ~1,800 words)

The sun was beginning to set over the Atlanta skyline, casting long, golden beams across the glass facade of the newly opened Sterling Atrium.

The crowds had thundered away, the VIP guests had departed for the evening galas, and the plaza had grown wonderfully quiet.

I stood on the expansive open-air rooftop garden of the forty-fourth floor, looking out over the city I loved. The cool evening breeze carried the hum of distant traffic and the rustle of the ornamental trees planted across the garden beds.

Footsteps sounded softly behind me on the stone paving stones.

Daniel and Sarah walked up beside me, holding hands. Sarah smiled warmly, resting her head against Daniel's shoulder.

“We’re heading down to dinner, Margaret. Are you sure you don't want to join us?” Sarah asked kindly.

“Go on ahead, you two,” I smiled, slipping my hand into my blazer pocket where my father's gold pocket watch rested securely against my palm. “I just want to enjoy the view for a few more minutes.”

“Don't stay up here too long, Mom. You have a board meeting at nine tomorrow morning,” Daniel reminded me with a gentle, affectionate grin.

“Yes, sir, Mr. Contractor,” I replied playfully.

They laughed, turning and walking back toward the glass elevator tower, their fingers tightly intertwined.

I watched them go, a profound sense of peace settling over my soul.

People often look at wealth as a shield—a mechanism to protect their children from suffering, failure, and hardship. They believe that true love means clearing every pebble from the road so their offspring never have to scrape their knees.

I had fallen into that trap for fifteen years after my husband died. I had tried to buy my son's happiness, cushioning every blow, insulating him from reality, and nearly destroying him in the process.

It wasn't until I took back the car keys, froze the credit cards, and locked the doors of the mansion that I truly showed him what love meant.

Love isn't giving someone everything they want. Love is giving them the strength to become everything they are capable of being.

I pulled the gold pocket watch from my pocket, flipped open the cover, and watched the tiny second hand sweep steadily forward into the future.

The empire was secure. The legacy was intact. And my son was finally a man of his own making.

I closed the watch, smiled out at the glittering city lights, and turned to walk toward the elevator.
