Chapter 5 - The Morning AfterBy 8:00 AM on Saturday, the culinary world of Chicago had completely imploded.

Audrey stood in her kitchen, sipping black coffee while scrolling through her phone. Every major food blog, Chicago news outlet, and gossip platform was plastered with headlines detailing the Blackstone Hotel disaster. “HOLLOWAY HOUSE HORROR: Restaurateur Brett Holloway’s Gala Publicly Crushed by Wife and Son Over Stolen Heirloom and Embezzlement Rumors.” Video clips of Sierra screaming on the ballroom floor and Micah calmly exposing the stolen brooch were circulating with millions of views across social media.
A sharp, urgent knock sounded at the front door.
Audrey set her coffee mug down and walked calmly to the entryway. When she pulled the door open, she found Brett standing on her porch.
He looked like a man who had aged ten years in a single night. His tuxedo jacket was gone, his shirt collar was unbuttoned, and his eyes were bloodshot and frantic. He looked desperate, pathetic, and entirely unraveled.
"Audrey... please, you have to let me in," Brett stammered, taking a desperate step forward. "The investors are pulling out of every single location. The board of directors called an emergency meeting for noon. Sierra is gone—she blocked my number and deleted all her corporate files before she fled to her mother's place in Milwaukee. Everything is falling apart."
Audrey didn't move an inch. She kept her hand resting on the edge of the door, her posture perfectly erect.
"Then I suggest you start packing light, Brett," Audrey said coolly.
"Audrey, we can fix this!" Brett pleaded, his voice cracking as he reached out a trembling hand toward her wrist. "We built Holloway House together! You're the heart of this business! I was... I was stupid, I was stressed, Sierra manipulated me—"
"Don't you dare," Audrey interrupted, her voice dropping into a register so cold that Brett instantly flinched and pulled his hand back. "Don't blame Sierra for a rot that started in your own character. You didn't just step out on our marriage, Brett. You forged my signature on corporate loan documents, you embezzled nearly a million dollars into a shell company bearing her name, and you planned to leave me destitute."
Brett’s jaw dropped. The color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse.
" How... how do you know about that?" he whispered, horrified.
"I’m an accountant, Brett. Did you really think you could hide financial fraud from the woman who balanced your books when we couldn't even afford electricity?" Audrey smiled, a sharp, humorless expression. "My cousin Marcus already has the forensic audit files. The U.S. Attorney’s office received copies via secure transmission at 7:00 AM. Corporate fraud and wire forgery carry federal prison time, in case you forgot to factor that into your cookbook deal."
Brett stared at her, finally realizing the terrifying magnitude of what he had triggered. He hadn't just lost a wife and a restaurant empire; he had walked straight into a legal trap designed by a woman he had underestimated for a decade.
"Audrey... please," Brett whimpered, his knees buckling slightly as he gripped the porch railing. "Think of Micah. Think of our family—"

"My family is inside eating pancakes made by a boy who has more integrity in his pinky finger than you have in your entire body," Audrey said firmly. "Goodbye, Brett."
She slammed the heavy oak door right in his face, locking the deadbolt with a crisp, final click that echoed like a gunshot in the quiet morning.
