Chapter 3 - The Paper Trail

The room went dead silent. You could hear the ice melting inside the water pitchers.
My aunt Clara gasped from the fourth table. "What did he say? Richard left debts?"
"That's a lie!" Eleanor hissed, her skin turning an unnatural shade of chalk white. "Richard was a visionary! He built an empire! Emma is the one who took over the books and hoarded the profits! She locked me out of the executive accounts!"
Julian didn't raise his voice. He simply unclasped the portfolio and pulled out a stack of certified legal briefs, setting them directly in front of Eleanor.
"For five years, you told everyone from Richmond to Charleston that you kept the family afloat after Richard passed," Julian said, his eyes scanning the surrounding relatives. "You told the country club that Emma was just an assistant doing secretarial chores while you managed the turnaround. But here are the audited tax returns from 2019 to present."
Marcus Campbell adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses and opened the top folder. "For the record, Alder Logistics was twenty-four hours away from Chapter 7 liquidation when Richard passed. Mrs. Vance—then Emma Alder—signed personal guarantees on four separate bridge loans using her own credit and her grandfather's inheritance. She took zero salary for thirty-six months while Eleanor drew an executive stipend of twelve thousand dollars a month for 'consulting services' she never rendered."
Brooke suddenly jumped to her feet, knocking her silver water goblet onto the floor. "This is disgusting! Emma, how dare you hire an attorney to humiliate Mom at my pre-wedding dinner! You fabricated these papers!"
"Fabricated?" Julian looked at Brooke with pure disdain. "Brooke, your boutique event planning agency, Ever After South, has operated at an eighty-thousand-dollar deficit since its inception. Who do you think was covering the vendor retainers every time your debit card bounced in Atlanta and Miami?"
Brooke's mouth opened and closed soundlessly. Her manicured hands gripped the edge of the table.
"Mom paid those!" Brooke stammered, looking frantically at Eleanor. "Mom secured investors! Private angel funds!"
"There was no angel fund, Brooke," Julian said ruthlessly. "The entity funding your fake career was an LLC called Alder Preservation Group. And there is only one sole member, founder, and owner of that corporation."
Julian placed his hand flat on my shoulder.
"Emma."
Murmurs erupted like wildfire across the room. My cousins were whispering furiously; Uncle Robert leaned in, squinting at the corporate documents Marcus was systematically distributing across the banquet tables.

Eleanor’s fingers began to shake violently. "No... that’s not true. Alder Preservation is an institutional restructuring fund arranged by Richard's old colleagues. They sent the checks to protect our legacy!"
"There were no colleagues, Mom," I finally spoke up, looking straight into her terrified eyes. "Dad’s partners abandoned him the week before he died because they knew the books were cooked. I created Alder Preservation to hide the truth from you. Because when you cried in my car and told me that losing Dad’s house would kill you, I was foolish enough to believe you loved this family. I sent thirty-one hundred dollars every month to the bank to stop the foreclosure auction. Not Richard. Not an investor. Me. Every single penny came from my blood, my late nights, and the life I sacrificed while you paraded Brooke around high society."
