Chapter 10 - The New FoundationTwo years later, the autumnal light fell softly over the rolling hills of Franklin, Tennessee.

Ranata stood on the wide stone porch of a beautiful renovated farmhouse she had purchased with her own earnings. Surrounding the house were ancient oak trees draped in golden October leaves. The air was crisp, smelling of woodsmoke and damp earth.

Behind her, the screen door slid open. Marcus Vance walked out onto the porch, carrying two glasses of red wine.

"The board just voted unanimously," Marcus said, handing her a glass. "Voss Legal Strategies is officially the lead advisory firm for the Southeastern Regional Infrastructure Fund. You're overseeing a two-billion-dollar portfolio."

Ranata took the glass, the deep red liquid catching the amber sunlight. "And how is the team holding up?"

"We just hired three new senior transactional associates," Marcus smiled. "I made sure to tell them your first rule: Every redline matters, and everyone's name goes on the cover page."

Ranata laughed—a warm, bright sound that carried cleanly across the open fields.

She leaned against the porch railing, looking out at the sun dipping below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of rose and gold. She thought back to that cold morning four days into her marriage—the marble atrium, the gold circle earrings, the cold coffee in her hand, and the terrifying feeling of falling off a cliff.

She realized now that she hadn't fallen at all. She had simply stepped out of a room that was far too small for her.

She raised her glass toward the setting sun, a quiet, triumphant toast to the woman who had double-checked the clauses no one else caught, who had stayed late in the dark, and who had finally built a life that no one else could ever take away.
