Chapter 10 - UnbrokenThe gala ended late into the evening.

The cool autumn breeze brushed against us as we stepped out onto the private stone terrace of the community center overlooking the dark, quiet lake.

The stars sparkled brightly in the clear night sky, reflecting off the calm water below.

Derek leaned against the stone balustrade, taking a deep breath of the cool night air, holding a mug of dark coffee. "Not bad for a kid who used to fall off her bicycle every ten feet, huh, David?"

I laughed softly, leaning beside him. "She got that resilience from her uncle."

"Nah," Derek smiled, looking over at Lena, who was chatting happily near the glass doors with several donors and shelter volunteers. "She got it from knowing her family has her back, no matter what."

Lena walked out onto the terrace, holding her coat wrapped tightly around her shoulders. She stepped between us, looping her right arm through mine and her left arm through Derek's.

"What are you two old men plotting out here?" she teased softly.

"Just talking about how proud we are of you, kiddo," Derek said, kissing the top of her head.

We stood together on the terrace in quiet, peaceful silence.

The terror of that 2:14 p.m. phone call, the blinding panic of the traffic, the splintered front door, and the sterile hospital lights felt like a distant, fading bad dream. In their place was something infinitely stronger—a bond forged in love, tested by danger, and proven unbroken.

I looked down at my daughter, seeing the bright, fearless future shining in her eyes.

Travis had thought he could isolate her, control her, and break her spirit behind locked doors. But he had failed to realize the one fundamental truth that defined our family:

May you like

We don't leave our own behind.

And as the quiet autumn night wrapped around us, I knew with absolute certainty that no matter what storms the world might bring, my daughter would never, ever walk alone again.
