Chapter 8 - Shadows in the Nursery

Ten miles north, inside the secluded sanctuary of the Moretti estate, the power went out all at once.

The chandelier in the grand foyer died with a metallic clunk, plunging the labyrinthine stone corridors into absolute, pitch-black darkness. Seconds later, the deep rumble of backup generators groaned in the sub-basement, but before the emergency red lights could flicker to life, the unmistakable, muffled pop-pop-pop of silenced automatic weapons echoed from the exterior courtyard.

In the second-floor service wing, Elena gasped, dropping the silver polish rag she had been holding. Her hands shook uncontrollably as she looked toward the nursery door.

"Mia!" she whispered frantically, rushing across the hardwood floor.

Mia was sitting on a plush wool rug beneath a large bay window, oblivious to the storm rattling the panes. Her small legs were crossed, and she was happily humming a nursery rhyme while filling in the outline of a smiling golden lion with an orange crayon.

"Mama, look," Mia said proudly, holding up the sheet. "The lion doesn't have a leash. He’s the king of the house, like Mr. Dante."

"Quiet, my angel. Shh!" Elena dropped to her knees, gathering her daughter into her arms so tightly that Mia let out a tiny gasp. "We have to hide. Now."

"Is Mr. Dante playing hide-and-seek again?" Mia asked, her wide hazel eyes blinking in the sudden gloom of the room.

"Yes, baby. But this time, we can't make a single sound."

Elena scooped Mia up and bolted toward the corridor. But as soon as she cracked the door, the smell of gunpowder and hot copper invaded her senses. Down the west hall, two security guards in Moretti suits lay motionless on the marble floor. Standing over them were three men dressed in unmarked black tactical gear, night-vision goggles strapped to their helmets, suppressed MP5 submachine guns resting in their gloved hands.

"Check the master bedroom," one of the men growled through a radio headset. "Rossi said Vance had the layout. The boss wants Dante's personal safe and every living witness erased. Burn the mansion to the ground."

"What about the staff?"

"No survivors. Stracci orders."

Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs like a trapped bird. The main exits were cut off. The grand staircase was a fatal funnel. There was only one place in the entire hundred-room fortress that nobody outside the bloodline knew existed: Dante’s private panic room, hidden behind the bookshelf in his study down the east wing.

"Hold onto my neck, Mia," Elena breathed into her daughter’s ear. "Don't let go, no matter what you hear."

Mia wrapped her tiny arms around Elena’s neck, burying her face into her mother’s collarbone. She didn't cry. Instead, she reached into her tiny pinafore pocket and clutched her plastic pink safety scissors like a talisman.

Elena moved with the silence born of four years dusting every crevice and floorboard of this mansion. She knew which floorboards groaned, which hinges needed oil, and which shadowed alcoves were invisible to the security cameras. She slipped from pillar to doorway, her soft-soled shoes gliding over the hardwood.

Behind them, glass shattered in the nursery.

"Room clear! Just kid toys here! They’re still on this floor!" a voice barked over a walkie-talkie.

Elena broke into a desperate sprint, her breath ragged, her lungs burning. She turned the corner into Dante’s private study, slammed the heavy mahogany door shut, and slid the antique brass deadbolt into place.

She rushed to the bookshelf, running her fingers frantically along the spines of ancient Italian leather volumes until she found the hollowed spine of Machiavelli’s *The Prince*. She pulled it down. A hidden keypad behind the wall panel lit up with a dim blue glow.

Elena froze.

*A passcode.*

Dante had never given her the code. Why would he? She was just the housekeeper, the widow of a low-level driver who had died in a car wreck years ago. Dante had been generous, letting them live in safety, but the mafia Don’s deepest secrets were guarded by six digits she didn't know.

*BAM! BAM!*

The heavy mahogany door shuddered as the hit squad kicked against the deadbolt. A burst of submachine gun fire chewed through the wood near the lock, splinters showering the Persian rug.

"Mama!" Mia whimpered, trembling against Elena's chest.

"It's okay, my love, it's okay," Elena sobbed, blindly typing random numbers into the keypad.

*BEEP-BEEP-BEEP. ACCESS DENIED.*

The brass lock gave way with a sickening crack. The study door was kicked open.
