Chapter 11 - The Unfinished Storm

By dawn, the estate was surrounded by federal unmarked vehicles. Julian Vance and Arthur Sterling were in federal custody facing charges of corporate espionage, conspiracy to commit murder, and fraud. The threat that had hung over the Moretti family for months was finally dismantled.
The morning sun broke through the gray lake fog, painting the limestone terrace in pale shades of gold.
Emma walked downstairs with a small duffel bag in her hand. Her contract had been to protect Isabella through the crisis. With the traitors arrested and round-the-clock federal security established, she knew her official purpose had concluded. She didn't want to overstay her welcome or complicate Vincent’s life further.
She found Vincent standing in the grand foyer, staring at a portrait of his late father. He had changed into a simple black sweater and trousers, looking exhausted but strikingly human.
When he saw the bag in her hand, his expression darkened instantly.
“Where do you think you’re going?” Vincent asked, stepping down into the center of the foyer.
“My brother is being discharged tomorrow, Vincent,” Emma said with a gentle, bittersweet smile. “And your mother is safe now. The threat is gone. I did what you asked me to do.”
“You think this was just a job?” Vincent took long, purposeful strides toward her until he was standing directly in front of her. He reached down and took the duffel bag from her fingers, dropping it onto the marble floor without breaking eye contact.
“Vincent—”
“I don’t care about the contract, Emma,” Vincent whispered, reaching out to cup her face in both of his warm hands. “I don’t want a companion for my mother. I want you. Stay with me. Let me protect you, let me take care of you and Leo—not out of debt, but because I can’t imagine this house without you anymore.”
Emma’s breath hitched, tears stinging the corners of her eyes. She leaned into his touch, her heart screaming at her to say yes.
Before she could speak, the heavy oak front doors of the mansion were violently thrown open.
Marcus rushed into the foyer, his face completely pale—a sight Emma had never witnessed before. Behind him walked an elderly woman, frail, wearing a vintage woolen coat, supported by a cane.
Isabella, who had just stepped onto the upstairs landing in her morning robe, froze at the top of the stairs, letting out a sharp, choked gasp that echoed across the vaulted ceiling.
“Vincent,” Marcus said, his voice shaking. “You need to see this. She arrived at the main gate with sealed court records from twenty-four years ago.”
The strange elderly woman lifted her head, looking straight past Vincent and locking her tearful eyes onto Emma.
“Emma,” the stranger whispered, her voice cracking with decades of grief. “My little girl... You survived.”

Vincent looked at the woman, then turned back to Emma, his eyes wide in sudden, horrified realization. The name on the sealed court dossier clutched in the stranger's hand read: *Carter-Moretti Inheritance Custody Agreement.*
Emma stepped back, her world spinning violently as Vincent gripped her wrist—not in love, but in utter shock as an entirely new, terrifying truth threatened to tear them apart.
