Chapter 11 - The Knock at Midnight

One month later, the Moretti estate was preparing for the event of the decade.
The engagement had been made official. The whispers in the Boston high society had been silenced by Dominic's absolute power; anyone who dared question Isabella's background found themselves excluded from society or facing financial ruin. For Leo and Lily, life had become a fairy tale. They called each other brother and sister, their laughter filling every corner of the once-somber mansion.
It was midnight on a chilly October evening.
The children were sound asleep in their rooms. Dominic and I stood in the grand library, reviewing the final floral arrangements for our upcoming winter wedding. Dominic stood behind me, his arms wrapped securely around my waist, his chin resting against my shoulder as we looked at the velvet invitations.
"You look breathtaking tonight, future Mrs. Moretti," he murmured, his lips brushing the sensitive skin of my neck, sending shivers through my spine.
"I still feel like I'm dreaming," I whispered, turning in his arms to wrap my hands around his neck. "Sometimes I wake up terrified that I'm back in that damp basement apartment, wondering how I'll buy milk for Lily."
Dominic's eyes darkened with protective fury. "You will never know cold or hunger again, Bella. I swear on my life, nobody will ever touch what is mine."
Suddenly, the red emergency phone on Dominic’s desk began to blare.
It wasn't a standard ringtone. It was a sharp, pulsing alarm that signaled a breach of the estate’s outer perimeter.
Dominic stiffened immediately. The warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced in an instant by the cold, calculating mask of a ruthless commander. He reached into his desk drawer, retrieved his firearm, and stepped in front of me.
He pressed the intercom button. "Report."
The voice of Vincenzo, his head of personal security, came through the speaker. But Vincenzo didn't sound alert or aggressive.
He sounded terrified. Confused. Stunned into near speechlessness.
"Boss..." Vincenzo stammered, breathing heavily. "You need to see the main gate monitors. Right now."
"What is it, Vincenzo? An attack?" Dominic demanded, his jaw tight.
"No, sir... It's not an attack," Vincenzo whispered, his voice trembling so violently that the microphone crackled. "A black town car just pulled up to the front gate. An armed escort from the European Syndicate stepped out. But boss... the passenger..."
"Speak, damn you!" Dominic barked.
"Sir... the passenger who just stepped out of the car... it's a woman." Vincenzo took a ragged breath. "She has her biometric scan. The gate accepted her retina."
Dominic’s face turned paper-white. The color drained from his skin so fast he looked like a corpse. His grip on the gun loosened.
"What are you saying?" Dominic whispered, the sound barely audible.

Through the intercom, Vincenzo delivered the words that shattered our world into a million jagged pieces:
"It’s Sophia, Mr. Moretti. Your wife... she’s alive. And she wants her son back."
