Chapter 6 - The Beggar at the GateI answered the call, holding the phone to my ear as I walked into the warm, dry marble lobby of my newly acquired corporate headquarters.

“Claire?” Dad’s voice was completely stripped of his usual stern, commanding authority. He sounded old, broken, and terrified. “Claire... where are you? The police just called Sarah... they said Tyler’s been arrested too.”

“They’re both in county custody, Dad,” I said, stepping onto the private executive elevator. “They were caught destroying evidence in the server room.”

A long, agonizing gasp sounded over the line.

“Claire... please,” Dad pleaded, his voice cracking with genuine tears. “Your mother is hysterically crying. Madison is hyperventilating on the living room floor. Aunt Sarah is threatening to sue us for introducing Tyler to Ryan. The whole family is falling apart!”

“The family was already broken, Dad,” I replied as the elevator doors slid shut, carrying me smoothly up to the top floor. “You just didn't notice because you were too busy enjoying the steak Ryan bought with stolen money.”

“I’m sorry!” Dad cried out, dropping all pretense of pride. “I am so, so sorry, Claire! I should have stopped him when he spit on you! I should have stood up for you! I was wrong! Please... use your influence to drop the charges! We’ll make Ryan give back every penny!”

“He can’t give it back, Dad,” I stated flatly. “He spent $1.4 million on luxury cars, private jets to Vegas, and high-stakes gambling debts. The IRS is seizing his lake house and Madison’s sports car tomorrow morning.”

Silence stretched over the line—a heavy, suffocating realization that no apology, no guilt trip, and no family loyalty appeal could undo the legal devastation Ryan had brought upon himself.

“What... what about Madison?” Dad asked softly. “She didn't know, Claire. She’s your sister.”

“Madison knew he was spending money far beyond his VP salary, Dad,” I said. “She didn't care where it came from as long as she could mock me at dinner with her designer handbags. She was complicit in the lifestyle, and now she has to deal with the bankruptcy.”

“Claire... please don't abandon us,” Dad whimpered.

I stood in front of the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of the CEO corner office, looking out over the glowing city skyline below.

“I’m not abandoning you, Dad,” I said calmly. “I’m just finally letting you experience the consequences of the monsters you enabled. Have a good night.”

I hung up the phone and set it face down on the heavy mahogany desk.
