Chapter 4 - The Fortress and the Wolves

By 9:30 p.m., the fallout was immediate and violent.

Sitting in the study of the Four Seasons penthouse overlooking the Boston Common, I watched the financial news scroll across my laptop screen. *MORETTI HEIR SHATTERS BARRETT ALLIANCE: STOCKS PLUNGE 8% IN AFTER-HOURS TRADING.*

My private phone buzzed on the mahogany desk. It was my chief financial officer, Marcus Vance—one of the three men in the corporation whose loyalty belonged to me rather than my grandfather.

"Dominic," Marcus’s voice was strained, breathless with panic. "The old man just called an emergency board meeting for 8:00 a.m. tomorrow. He’s invoking Clause 14 of the family bylaws—claiming mental incompetence and gross breach of fiduciary duty to strip you of your executive voting rights. He's also frozen your corporate accounts."

"Let him try," I said coldly, watching the rain beat against the triple-paned glass. "Clause 14 requires a unanimous vote of the primary shareholders. Marcus, do the Barretts hold enough proxy shares to tip the balance?"

"If Arthur Barrett votes with Vincenzo, yes. Dominic, they are moving fast. And that's not all. Vincenzo’s personal fixer, Donovan Vance, just filed an emergency petition in Suffolk County Family Court."

My spine stiffened. "On what grounds?"

"Unfit parental guardianship. He's claiming the children were hidden in substandard living conditions, that Clara Hayes is an unstable custodian, and that the Moretti trust is petitioning for immediate emergency custody to place the boys in an approved private estate under Vincenzo’s direct guardianship."

A wave of primal, violent rage surged through my chest, but I forced it down into a cold, lethal focus. "Who is the presiding judge?"

"Judge Harrison Croft. He owes his entire judicial appointment to your grandfather."

"Call our legal team. Pull Peter Sterling out of bed. Tell him he has eight hours to prepare an injunction based on jurisdictional fraud. Clara’s primary residence is in Maine. Massachusetts family court has no initial jurisdiction over children born and raised outside the Commonwealth without a documented paternity confirmation."

"On it," Marcus said. "Dominic... be careful. Enzo isn't playing by the law anymore. When an old wolf knows he's about to be put down, he bites everything in reach."

"Let him bite," I said, and ended the call.

I pushed back the leather chair and stepped out into the suite’s expansive living room.

The scene that greeted me stopped the fury in my veins, replacing it with an ache so profound it nearly brought me to my knees.

On the massive velvet sofa, four small boys lay tangled in a pile of oversized goose-down blankets. Leo was sleeping with his arm draped protectively across Julian’s back. Theo was curled into a ball, clutching a hotel pillow. Nate’s mouth was slightly open, snoring softly, his small chest rising and falling in rhythmic peace.

Beside the sofa, Clara sat on the floor, her knees pulled to her chest, watching them with fierce, defensive vigilance. When she heard my footsteps, her head snapped up.

"They fell asleep during the movie," she whispered, her voice tight with anxiety. "Dominic... I heard you on the phone. He's coming for them, isn't he?"

I walked over and knelt down beside her, ignoring the pain in my tailored trousers as my knees pressed into the carpet.

"He's trying," I said honestly. "He filed an emergency custody petition tonight."

Clara covered her mouth, a stifled sob breaking from her throat. "I knew it. I knew I never should have set foot back in this city. I can't lose them, Dominic. They are my whole life. If he takes them—"

"He will have to kill me first," I said with absolute finality.

I reached out and took both of her hands in mine. Her fingers were ice-cold. I brought them to my chest, pressing them directly against the steady, heavy beat of my heart.

"Look at me, Clara," I commanded softly.

She lifted her tear-stained eyes to meet mine.

"Six years ago, I was a coward who believed my grandfather had more power than the truth. I let his lies poison my mind. But I am not that boy anymore. I control fifty-two percent of the Moretti maritime logistics fleet in my own name. I have private security stationed at every entrance of this hotel. Tomorrow morning, we are filing my formal voluntary acknowledgment of paternity with the state, backed by immediate DNA confirmation. You are their mother. I am their father. No corrupt judge in Boston has the power to rip four boys from both of their biological parents."

"He has money, Dominic," she whispered. "He buys people."

"So do I," I replied, a ruthless smile touching the corners of my mouth. "The difference is, he fights for his pride. I am fighting for my sons. And for you."

Clara stared at me, the years of pain and exhaustion warring with the desperate hope flickering in her amber-flecked eyes. She leaned forward, resting her forehead against my shoulder. I wrapped my arms around her, pulling her close, burying my face in the soft crook of her neck.

For the first time in six years, the hollow space in my chest was filled.

Behind us, a soft rustle sounded from the couch.

I looked up. Julian was sitting up, rubbing his eyes with his small left hand, tilting his head just so.

"Dad?" the little boy murmured, testing the unfamiliar word on his tongue.

The word shattered the last remnants of the cold, unfeeling corporate phantom I had been for six years.

"I'm here, Julian," I said, my voice thick with emotion. "I'm right here."
