Chapter 10 - Epilogue - The Unbroken PathThe Atlantic breeze carried the scent of salt and blooming spring flowers through the open windows of our Beacon Hill brownstone overlooking the Charles River.

It was a Sunday evening, quiet and peaceful.

I sat at the mahogany dining table, holding the final, official parchment embossed with the seal of Boston University: Doctor of Philosophy in Neurological Physical Therapy.

Dr. Tessa Fitzgerald.

The fifty thousand dollars of debt that had once felt like a crushing mountain was now just a distant footnote in a life transformed beyond recognition.

Footsteps echoed softly on the hardwood floor behind me. Massimo walked into the dining room carrying two glasses of chilled white wine, setting one down beside my diploma before wrapping his arms around my shoulders from behind, resting his chin on the top of my head.

“Doctor Fitzgerald,” he murmured, the title rolling off his tongue with deep, unmistakable pride. “Has a magnificent ring to it.”

“It took twenty-seven years, three overdue tuition payments, and one very dangerous Mafia boss to earn it,” I joked, covering his hands with mine.

Massimo chuckled, turning me around in his embrace so I was facing him. He looked down at me, the hard, severe lines of his face softening into the expression reserved only for me.

“You saved my life, Tessa,” he said quietly, his voice stripping away all the armor he wore for the rest of the world. “When everyone else saw a broken man in a wheelchair—when my own blood tried to keep me trapped there—you saw someone worth fighting for.”

“You were worth fighting for, Massimo,” I whispered, rising onto my tiptoes to press my lips to his.

Outside, the lights of Boston began to twinkle across the river, illuminating a city that had once felt cold, unforgiving, and impossible to conquer.

We had both stared down our demons—debt, betrayal, violence, and greed—and we had emerged on the other side unbroken.

We had built a future out of the wreckage, step by difficult step, proving that some wounds don't destroy you; they simply show you how strong you were all along.

And as Massimo pulled me close, holding me against his heart as the evening stars came out over the harbor, I knew our path forward was wide open, bright, and entirely our own.
