Chapter 6 - The Record of Sins

Rock bottom has a way of stripping away every defense mechanism a man spends a lifetime constructing.

Over the next two weeks, the Belle Meade house began to decay. The utilities were switched to basic service. The manicured lawns grew ragged. I stopped shaving. I stopped changing my clothes. I lived out of the cardboard box Mrs. Pearl had left by the door, which contained the remaining personal mementos Corinne hadn't bothered to take with her.

Among the contents was a simple, cloth-bound notebook.

It was Corinne’s pregnancy journal.

I had never seen it before. She had kept it hidden in her nightstand, between the pages of her architectural textbooks.

I sat on the floor of Owen’s empty nursery, leaning my back against the wall where his crib used to stand, and I opened it under the faint light of a single desk lamp.

The entries didn't begin with anger. They began with love.

*March 14:*

*We found out today. A boy. Grant cried when he saw the ultrasound. He swore to me that he was going to slow down, that he would hire a Chief Operating Officer so he could be home for dinner every night. I saw the man I fell in love with at Auburn. I pray he remembers that man when the baby comes.*

*June 2:*

*Grant missed our first Lamaze class tonight. He said an emergency zoning appeal came up in Williamson County. I found an invoice from an upscale florist in his briefcase later that night for two dozen ivory roses sent to our house. He always buys me flowers when he’s hiding something. Why doesn't he just talk to me? Doesn't he know I would carry the world for him if he just held my hand?*

*August 19:*

*A woman called his phone while he was in the shower. Her name popped up as 'T. Vaughn.' I answered, but she hung up immediately. When I asked him, he became angry. He called me paranoid. He said I was letting pregnancy hormones ruin our marriage. He said he was working eighty hours a week to build an empire for our son. I felt so small, so ashamed for doubting him. But the perfume on his jacket when he hugged me was not mine.*

*October 3 — 11:45 PM:*

*The contractions started an hour ago. The pain is blinding. There is blood. I have called Grant eight times. It goes to voicemail. His office manager says he is in an executive retreat with investors in Atlanta. Mrs. Pearl is helping me down the stairs. I don't think my baby is getting enough oxygen. God, please, if you take me, let my boy live. Grant, where are you? Why aren't you here?*

Tears hit the yellowed pages, smearing the ink of her handwriting.

The journal ended there.

I closed the book, pulled my knees to my chest, and pressed my forehead against the floorboards.

The lies I had told myself for years collapsed into dust. I had told myself I was working for them. I had told myself that Corinne was high-maintenance, that she didn't appreciate the brutal pressure of commercial development, that Tessa was merely an escape valve for a man crushed by the weight of corporate responsibility.

It was all garbage.

I had been vain. Selfish. Cowardly. I had taken a brilliant, devoted woman and starved her of affection, then treated her forbearance as stupidity. I had left her to face death on an operating table so I could feel like a conquering king in a hotel room with a woman who despised me.

For the first time in my life, I didn't want to fight to win.

I didn't care about beating Julian Mercer. I didn't care about reclaiming my luxury car or my penthouse accounts or my social standing at the Belle Meade Country Club.

I just wanted to make it right.

May you like

Even if making it right meant destroying myself entirely to ensure that Corinne and Owen were protected from the wreckage I had created.
