Chapter 4 - The Frozen Assets(Length: ~1800 words)

At 8:00 AM on Christmas Eve morning, the sun rose over a freezing, foggy Querétaro.

While the rest of the city was preparing for holiday celebrations, I sat in the downtown executive offices of Vance, Sterling & Associates—the top forensic litigation firm in the state.

Sitting across from me at a long mahogany conference table was Senior Partner Ricardo Vance—no relation to Patricia, but a former state prosecutor who had worked alongside my father thirty years ago.

Ricardo adjusted his reading glasses, reviewing the scanned affidavits and bank transfer logs displayed on his desktop monitor.

“Esteban was a genius,” Ricardo said softly, a deep look of professional admiration in his eyes. “He didn't just document the 1998 embezzlement, Daniela. He maintained a continuous forensic link tracking how Patricia laundered those offshore funds into residential real estate across Querétaro over twenty-five years.”

“Including the house I currently live in?” I asked.

“Including your main residence,” Ricardo confirmed, tapping the screen. “The land deed for your main house was originally purchased using a shell company registered under Santa Clara Holdings. When Mauricio married you, Patricia transferred the title into Mauricio’s name as a 'wedding gift,' but she kept a secondary mortgage lien on the property to ensure he couldn't sell it without her consent.”

“Which means the house was bought with stolen municipal charity funds,” I realized.

“Precisely,” Ricardo smiled predatorily. “Under federal asset forfeiture laws, any property purchased with proceeds from felony embezzlement is subject to immediate federal seizure.”

Ricardo pulled out a thick blue binder containing three pre-drafted legal filings bearing the gold seal of the Federal District Court.

“At 9:00 AM today,” Ricardo announced, “the Federal Prosecutor’s Office for Financial Crimes will execute an emergency freezing order against all bank accounts, real estate titles, and corporate entities associated with Patricia Vance-Gómez and Mauricio Vance.”

“And the custody petition?” I asked.

“I’ve already filed an emergency ex parte motion for sole legal and physical custody of Mateo and Sofia,” Ricardo handed me a signed court order. “Given the documented evidence of physical elder abuse against your mother, alongside the ongoing federal criminal investigation, Judge Ramirez has granted a temporary restraining order. Mauricio and Patricia are prohibited from coming within five hundred meters of you, your children, or this duplex.”

I took the signed court order in my hands, feeling a profound, weightless relief wash over my chest.

For five years, I had lived in fear of pleasing a husband who didn't love me and a mother-in-law who despised my very existence. Today, the legal shield my father had forged over twenty-five years was finally locking into place around my children and my mother.

My phone chimed on the table.

It was a text message from an unknown number.

I opened it. It was a photograph sent from Mauricio’s phone.

The photo showed the lock on the front door of my duplex—the heavy iron bar I had installed last night was visibly scratched, with crowbar marks along the doorframe.

Below the photo was a text message from Mauricio:

“We know you’re downtown with your lawyers, Daniela. We have a locksmith coming at 10:00 AM. If you don’t drop these ridiculous court motions and sign over the duplex deed by noon, we’re taking the twins to my mother’s estate in Guanajuato. Let’s see what your lawyers can do when the kids are across state lines.”

I looked at the text message, my blood turning to ice, but my hands remained entirely steady.

They were desperate. They knew the federal net was closing around them, and they were attempting one final, illegal kidnapping move to blackmail me into submission.

I turned my phone screen toward Ricardo.

Ricardo scanned the text message, his eyes narrowing into cold, sharp focus. He picked up his desk phone, pressed speed-dial, and spoke into the receiver:

“Director Gomez? This is Ricardo Vance. We have an active felony extortion and attempted child abduction threat in progress at the duplex property in Vista Hermosa. Execute the federal arrest warrants immediately.”
