Chapter 8 - The Final Desperate MoveWinter had set into Chicago, covering the city streets in a layer of icy snow.

Evelyn Vance sat in a small, drafty room at the Sunline Budget Motel, wrapped in a threadbare blanket. Her hands, once adorned with diamond rings, were now rough and chapped. She survived on small monthly government checks and whatever meager money Daniel could spare from his low-commission car sales job.
Her bitterness, however, had not faded. It had curdled into an obsessive, toxic hatred.
Every time she turned on the television or passed a newsstand, she saw Rachel’s face. Rachel had become a symbol of female empowerment, while Evelyn had become a social pariah, completely erased from the high-society clubs she once dominated.
"It's not fair," Evelyn muttered to herself, staring at a newspaper clipping of Rachel and Julian at a charity gala. "She took my house. She took my son's business. She took our status. She owes us!"
Her mind, twisted by desperation and rage, began to formulate one final, unhinged plan.
That afternoon, Evelyn put on her last remaining good winter coat and took a bus downtown. She knew where Rachel’s studio was located. She had spent weeks studying Rachel’s daily schedule through news updates and public event posts.
At 6:30 PM, the lights inside Phoenix Beauty Consulting began to dim as employees headed home for the evening. Rachel stayed behind in her private office to finish reviewing the financial reports for the upcoming quarter.
The heavy glass front door clicked open.
Rachel looked up from her desk, expecting to see Julian, who had promised to pick her up for dinner.
Instead, a gaunt, unkempt woman stepped into the foyer, dripping melting snow onto the hardwood floor.
Rachel froze.
"Evelyn?" Rachel said, standing up slowly behind her desk.
Evelyn stepped deeper into the office, her eyes wild and bloodshot, fixed on Rachel. "Look at you," Evelyn hissed, her voice raspy and trembling. "Living in luxury. Drinking champagne while my son and I freeze in a motel!"
"Evelyn, you need to leave," Rachel said calmly, her hand slowly creeping toward the desk phone to hit the emergency speed dial for building security. "You are trespassing."
"Trespassing?!" Evelyn shrieked, slamming her hand against a display case, sending a glass bottle of cosmetic serum shattering onto the floor. "This studio was built with my son's money! You stole our life! You ruined Daniel!"
"Daniel ruined himself!" Rachel countered, her voice dropping into a hard, unwavering line. "And you helped him do it! You stole my medical money after I saved your son's life! You tried to throw me out like trash! You did this to yourselves, Evelyn!"
Evelyn reached into her coat pocket, her face contorting with pure, malicious rage. "If my family can't have a future, you won't have one either!"
She pulled out a small glass bottle filled with a harsh, yellowish liquid—industrial drain cleaner acid—and unscrewed the cap with her shaking thumb.
"Let's see how much your doctor boyfriend loves you when I finish what that fire started!" Evelyn screamed, lunging forward with the bottle raised!
Rachel’s instincts kicked in. Four months of physical therapy had restored her reflexes and upper body strength. She didn't freeze in fear like she used to.
As Evelyn threw her arm forward to spray the acid, Rachel grabbed a heavy brass desk lamp from her table and shoved it directly into Evelyn’s path, blocking the splash!
The corrosive liquid splashed violently against the metal lamp shade, sizzling and smoking as it ate through the brass coating!
Evelyn gasped in shock, but before she could recover, the office door was kicked wide open!
"Rachel!" Julian shouted!
Julian rushed in, seeing the threat instantly. He tackled Evelyn to the ground, pinning her hands behind her back and knocking the acid bottle away across the floor!
Building security guards, who had been alerted by the automated phone signal Rachel triggered, sprinted into the office seconds later with their batons drawn.
"Get her off me! Call the police!" Julian demanded, holding the screaming, struggling woman down on the floor.
Evelyn writhed under the security guard's grip, her hair wildly matted, screaming profanities as they hauled her to her feet. "You ruined us! You ugly little bitch, you ruined us!"
Rachel stood behind her desk, holding the smoking brass lamp. She was breathing heavily, but her hands were steady. She looked at Evelyn—not with fear, but with absolute pity for a woman who had let hatred destroy her soul.
"Take her away," Rachel told the officers softly.

Ten minutes later, flashing red and blue police lights illuminated the snowy street outside the building. Evelyn was handcuffed and shoved into the back of a police cruiser, charged with Attempted Aggravated Assault with a Hazardous Chemical, Trespassing, and Hate Crime enhancements.
This time, there would be no bail, no collateral, and no Marcus Vance to save her. Evelyn Vance was going to prison for a very long time.
