Chapter 6 - The Collapse of the Lake HouseThe public press conference acted like a nuclear strike on my sister's carefully constructed world.

Within three hours of the news broadcast airing on the evening news, the public narrative completely flipped. The very social media groups that had initially sympathized with Vanessa were now flooded with thousands of furious comments condemning her and my mother.
People were outraged by the sheer cruelty of stealing a sick child's medical fund to buy a luxury lake house.
Vanessa’s online fashion boutique was inundated with thousands of negative reviews, forcing her to shut down her website and social media pages by midnight. Local boutiques that carried her clothing line immediately canceled their contracts and returned her inventory.
On Sunday morning, Mark’s divorce attorney served Vanessa with formal divorce papers at her lake house, accompanied by an emergency court order removing Mark’s name from all joint debt liabilities associated with the property.
Vanessa was left entirely alone in a giant, frozen lake house she couldn't afford, with no income, no husband, and facing federal and state felony charges.
At 4:00 PM on Sunday, my phone rang.
It was Mark.
"Maya," Mark said quietly. "I just left the lake house with my remaining clothes. The court-appointed receiver is putting a foreclosure and asset-seizure padlocks on the gates tomorrow morning at eight."
"How is she taking it, Mark?" I asked softly.
"She's hysterically screaming at her reflection in the mirror," Mark said with a weary sigh. "She still thinks she's the victim. She told me that you 'tricked' her into stealing the money because you didn't fight hard enough when Grandma died."
I shook my head in utter disbelief. The level of narcissistic denial was staggering.
"And your mother?" Mark added. "Her landlord served her with a thirty-day notice to vacate her rental property because her accounts are frozen and she missed her lease payment yesterday."
"They brought this entirely on themselves, Mark."

"I know," Mark said sincerely. "Maya... I want you to know that I spoke with Marcus today. I am surrendering my secondary equity claim on the lake house to the court receiver so the property can be liquidated at auction immediately to pay back Lily’s trust in full."
"Thank you, Mark," I said, feeling a wave of genuine relief. "That means everything to Lily."
