Chapter 7 - DISMANTLING THE ALTAR

The silence in the grand foyer was thick, suffocating, and absolute.
Marcus stared at me as if the marble floor had suddenly turned into an open grave. His mouth opened and closed twice, but no sound came out.
“You told me...” Marcus rasped, his voice trembling as he looked wildly at Sylvia. “You told me she was a clerk! You said she was an old woman who lived on a pension!”
“I was an Assistant United States Attorney for thirty-one years, Marcus,” I said, taking two slow, deliberate steps forward. The rhythmic *tap* of my cane on the marble sounded like the countdown of a bomb. “I spent my career dealing with cartel bosses, corrupt senators, and multi-million-dollar money launderers. Did you truly believe that because I baked cookies for my daughter, I had forgotten how to execute an asset forfeiture?”
Vanessa Sterling pushed past her father, her designer heels clicking sharply. “This is ridiculous! Daddy, make them leave! Marcus is your partner! She’s just a bitter, estranged mother trying to shake us down because Marcus threw her pathetic daughter out!”
“Vanessa,” I said softly, turning my gaze to her. “I suggest you speak with your personal attorney before you utter another syllable in the presence of these officers.”
Vanessa sneered. “You can't threaten me, old woman!”
“I’m not threatening you, Miss Sterling. I am providing legal notice,” I replied, handing a document to Deputy Chief Chen, who stepped up beside me. “At eight o'clock this morning, federal agents executed a simultaneous search warrant on the cloud servers of Sterling Logistics. They recovered eighty-four falsified container manifests signed using your administrative digital signature.”
Arthur Sterling flinched as if he had been slapped across the face. “What did you say?”
“Vanessa has been Marcus’s inside accomplice for fourteen months, Arthur,” I said, looking directly into the old man's devastated eyes. “Together, they siphoned seven point two million dollars out of your corporate accounts into three shell corporations in Grand Cayman—*Vance Maritime Holdings, Blue Ocean Logistics,* and *St. Jude Consulting.* Marcus used the funds to cover his speculative losses on short-margin tech derivatives. When the accounts ran dry, he began drawing directly from your junior employees’ pension fund.”
“No!” Vanessa shrieked, backing into her father’s chest. “Daddy, she’s lying! She fabricated it! Tell her she’s lying!”
Arthur didn't look at his daughter. He was staring at the thick ledger sheets Sarah Chen was holding out to him. Arthur took the papers with trembling hands, his eyes scanning the account numbers, the routing codes, and his daughter’s personal authorization stamp.
A low, guttural groan tore from Arthur Sterling’s chest. He looked up at Marcus, his face purple with rage. “You... you used my daughter? You robbed my company?”
“Arthur, please! Listen to me!” Marcus pleaded, raising his hands, his voice cracking into a desperate whine. “It was a loan! It was an operational bridge loan! I was going to replace the capital after the fourth-quarter dividends cleared! Chloe set this up—Chloe hacked my files to frame me!”
“Chloe is currently in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at St. Jude’s,” I said, my voice dropping so low and sharp it cut through the room like an autopsy scalpel.
A collective gasp rippled through the assembled dinner guests.
“Her core body temperature when I pulled her off that bench at Bay Six was ninety-four degrees,” I continued, never taking my eyes off Marcus. “She has four fractured ribs. A lacerated spleen. Extensive defensive contusions on both wrists, and a concussion caused by blunt force impact against a solid oak banister.”
Detective Miller stepped forward, holding up a clear evidence bag containing high-resolution 8x10 color photographs of Chloe’s battered face and torso taken in the trauma bay three hours ago.
Miller held the photographs up for the entire room to see.
Guests turned their heads away in disgust. Two women covered their mouths and began to weep. Arthur Sterling stared at the photos, his eyes wide with revulsion.
“My God...” Arthur whispered, backing away from Marcus as if he were carrying the plague. “You... you did this to your wife?”
“She fell!” Marcus screamed, his eyes bulging wildly. “She was hysterical! She was drunk and she slipped down the stairs! Ask my mother! Sylvia was there! Sylvia will tell you!”
