Chapter 6 - The Fall of VanessaThe next two weeks moved with terrifying speed.

Deprived of Daniel's financial backing, Vanessa Reed's carefully constructed world collapsed like a house of cards.

The luxury apartment lease Daniel had applied for was canceled after Robert personally contacted the property management company and informed them that Daniel no longer had access to the family guarantees.

Without the apartment, without the credit cards, and faced with the public exposure of her role in Daniel's financial dissolution, Vanessa's true nature surfaced.

On a freezing Friday afternoon, I received a phone call from Margaret.

"You won't believe what just happened," Margaret said, her tone a mix of disbelief and satisfaction.

"What happened?"

"Vanessa showed up at Daniel's office building downtown," Margaret told me. "She threw a massive scene in the lobby because Daniel refused to answer her calls. She was screaming that he promised to pay her divorce attorney and take care of her son."

I leaned back in my office chair. "Did Daniel talk to her?"

"Security escorted her out of the building," Margaret said. "And Daniel's managing partner called Robert an hour ago. The firm is deeply concerned about the public disruption and the potential legal exposure from the audit your attorney requested. They've put Daniel on administrative leave pending an internal review."

I sat in silence for a moment, processing the news. "He lost his job?"

"He lost his standing, his reputation, and his leverage," Margaret corrected softly. "He did it to himself, Emily. He thought he could live two lives without paying for either one."

That evening, Daniel called me from a hotel room near the airport—a budget hotel he was paying for with a small personal account his attorney had managed to unfreeze for basic living expenses.

His voice was completely broken.

"Emily... please," he wept into the phone. "She's insane. Vanessa is completely crazy. She showed up at my work. She ruined everything. I didn't realize... I didn't see who she really was."

"You saw exactly who she was, Daniel," I said calmly. "She was an easy ego boost. She was someone who validated your vanity while I was home keeping your real life together."

"I'm so sorry," he sobbed. "I'll sign whatever you want. Just please... tell my parents to talk to me. Tell them not to throw me away."

"I didn't turn your parents against you, Daniel," I said. "You did that the moment you assumed they would value your arrogance over my dignity. Speak to your lawyer. My terms are in his inbox."

I hung up the phone before he could reply.
