Chapter 4 - The Public Smear(Length: ~1800 words)

By the day after Christmas, the scandal had erupted across local television networks and social media platforms.
Headline banners across Salt Lake news broadcasts read: "MUNICIPAL WATER FRAUD INVESTIGATION: VANCE CIVIL ASSETS FROZEN AMID CATASTROPHIC INFRASTRUCTURE RISK."
My parents and Russell had retained a high-priced, theatrical defense attorney named Arthur Vance—a distant cousin of my father’s who specialized in high-conflict public relations litigation.
At 2:00 PM on December 27th, Arthur held a press conference on the steps of the Salt Lake County Courthouse.
I sat in my downtown office, watching the live broadcast on my wall-mounted television screen.
On the monitor, my mother Darlene stood beside Arthur, wearing an oversized black coat, holding a handkerchief, dabbing fake tears from her eyes. My father Calvin stood beside her, looking fragile and utterly defeated.
"My clients, Calvin and Darlene Vance, are honorable, hard-working Utah citizens who built Vance Civil from the ground up," Arthur declared dramatically into a dozen media microphones. "What we are witnessing today is a tragedy of corporate greed and filial betrayal!"
Arthur pointed a finger directly toward the camera lens.
"Naomi Vance, the CEO of Vance Technical Solutions, brought this municipal project to her father seven years ago," Arthur lied smoothly to the reporters. "When administrative discrepancies arose, rather than helping her elderly parents resolve technical misunderstandings, Naomi Vance selectively manipulated sensor data to frame her own brother and cover up her firm’s failure to properly monitor the site!"
Darlene sobbed loudly into her handkerchief on cue. "She threw us out of our own home on Christmas Eve!" Darlene wailed to the cameras. "She told us she didn't care if her father went to prison! She only cares about her company's stock evaluation!"
My phone instantly exploded with calls from news reporters, industry partners, and corporate clients.
Marcus Thorne stepped into my office, holding a tablet displaying a surge of negative social media comments under news clips of Darlene’s speech.
"They're trying to execute a public smear campaign to destroy your credibility before the grand jury convenes next week," Marcus stated, his face set in a hard, grim line. "They want the public to see this as a bitter family feud rather than a criminal fraud case."
"It's a classic move," I said, taking a slow sip of water. "Make enough noise in the press so the jury pool thinks the evidence is corrupted by personal bias."
"Two of our municipal clients just called our media relations line," Marcus warned. "They’re asking if Vance Technical Solutions is facing civil liability."
I stood up from my desk, walking over to my floor-to-ceiling glass windows.
"Call a national press conference for 10:00 AM tomorrow morning in our main auditorium," I ordered calmly.
Marcus raised an eyebrow. "Are we issuing a formal statement?"
"We aren't just issuing a statement, Marcus," I replied, turning around with an unyielding look in my eyes. "We are releasing the raw, unedited audio recordings from Christmas Eve."
Marcus gasped softly. "You recorded Christmas dinner?"
"My SUV’s security dash-cam was parked directly outside their dining room window, and my smartwatch carried a continuous voice memo active during the entire argument," I revealed, pulling a flash drive from my pocket. "I recorded every word my mother said—including the moment she admitted to stealing the Tooele land money, and the moment she threw the glass of water across the table."

A slow, fierce smile spread across Marcus’s face. "Naomi... that will completely obliterate their public relations strategy."
"They wanted to use the public to bully me into lying for them," I said, my voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register. "Now, the public is going to hear the exact truth."
