Chapter 6 - The Shattered MirrorMy mother’s blood-curdling scream echoed off the glass walls of the conference room as the FBI agents stepped forward.

"No! No! There’s been a mistake!" she wailed, throwing her arms over my father as an agent ordered him to stand and place his hands behind his back. "Michael didn't do anything wrong! This is a family matter! Ava, tell them! Tell them to stop!"

I didn't move an inch. I sat anchored in my chair, watching as the steel cuffs clicked around my father's wrists. He didn't look at me. He stared down at the carpet, his chest heaving, his posture completely collapsing as the illusion of his respectable life dissolved into cold metal.

"Ava! You monster!" Mo'Nique shrieked as female Agent Martinez handcuffed her wrists behind her back. Jamal began to cry loudly in his stroller, frightened by the commotion. "You put handcuffs on your own sister?! Over money?! You set us up!"

"You set yourselves up the day you put Marcus's name on a fraudulent loan," I said, my voice cutting through her hysterical screaming with deadly clarity. "And you sealed it when you brought a fake will to my dead husband’s memory."

Brian was pinned against the glass wall by the second FBI agent, his face pressed against the window overlooking the city he had tried to conquer through fraud. "I want a lawyer," Brian choked out, his arrogance completely gone. "I'm not saying another word. Michael initiated the loan application! He came to me!"

"Shut up, Brian!" my father suddenly roared, snapping his head up, his face twisted in rage. "You told me it was clean! You said you had a back-channel broker who would clear the guarantee without Marcus knowing!"

"Enough!" Agent Miller commanded, hauling my father up by his arm. "You'll both have plenty of time to explain it to the Magistrate Judge."

My mother threw herself across the table toward me, her eyes wild with hysteria, grabbing at my suit jacket. "Ava! Stop this insanity! Call off the police! You're destroying your father! You're destroying your sister’s baby! How can you be so heartless?!"

I slowly reached up and unclasped her fingers from my jacket, pushing her hands away with deliberate, unyielding force.

"Heartless?" I looked into my mother’s eyes, seeing for the first time the pathetic, manipulative coward she had always been. "For thirty-four years, Mom, you watched them bleed me dry. You made me feel small so Mo'Nique could feel big. You asked me to give up my dignity, my savings, and my self-respect to fix their mistakes. And when Marcus died, you didn't even ask if I was okay before you helped them try to rob his grave."

"Ava, please..." she sobbed, sinking onto her knees beside my chair. "We're your family..."

"No," I whispered, leaning down so only she could hear me over Jamal’s crying. "You were just the people who lived in the same house. My real family was the man whose memory you tried to drag through the dirt."

Inspector Lin gently escorted my mother away from the table as the agents led my father, Mo'Nique, and Brian out through the private service elevator to avoid creating a scene in the public lobby.

The glass doors clicked shut. The room returned to an eerie, ringing silence.

David walked over and laid a hand gently on my shoulder. "Are you alright, Ava?"

May you like

I stared at the empty chairs across the table—the discarded water glasses, the scattered papers, the legal release that was meant to ruin me.

"I am," I said, breathing in a long, deep lungful of air that felt lighter than any breath I had taken since Marcus died. "For the first time in my life, David, I really am."
