Chapter 8 - THE TRAP CLOSES

The relief was short-lived.
Mara appeared in the doorway of Room 204, her expression tight and pale. She held her phone out toward Matteo.
"We have a catastrophic problem," Mara said.
Matteo helped Elena sit back on the bed, keeping one protective arm wrapped securely around her waist. "What did she do?"
"Luciana didn't wait for us to call the police," Mara said. "She moved first. Thirty minutes ago, she walked into the Manhattan Family Court with Dr. Vance’s forged psychological affidavits and an emergency ex-parte petition. She claimed you suffered a catastrophic psychotic break following Elena’s memorial anniversary, that you stormed her house with a firearm, and that you are an immediate danger to Leah."
Matteo’s blood ran cold. "Where is Leah?"
"She had a court-ordered protective custody warrant issued by Judge Holbrook—one of her oldest political allies. Two unmarked Child Protective Services vehicles and a squad of private security guards arrived at the penthouse ten minutes ago. They took Leah, Matteo."
"No!" Elena screamed, a sound of pure maternal agony that ripped through the sterile concrete room. She lunged forward, grabbing Matteo’s lapels. "No! She has my baby! Matteo, she can't have my baby!"
"Where did they take her, Mara?" Matteo demanded, rising to his feet, helping Elena stand, supporting her weight.
"They didn't take her to a state facility," Mara said, checking the active dispatch logs on her tablet. "Luciana’s lawyers arranged for 'temporary kin custody' pending an emergency competency hearing. Leah was delivered directly to Luciana’s penthouse on Fifth Avenue. Your mother has barricaded the building with private armed security. She’s filing for full legal guardianship as we speak."
"She thinks she can erase us," Matteo said, his voice dropping into a register of deadly calm. "She thinks because Elena is legally dead, and because she’s branding me as violently insane, she can take Leah and disappear behind her billions."
"She has the law on her side right now, Matteo," Mara warned. "On paper, you are an armed fugitive who destroyed a clinic and assaulted a physician. If we try to breach the Fifth Avenue building by force, NYPD tactical units will engage us before we reach the lobby."
Elena stepped forward, pulling herself upright. The trembling had stopped. The frightened, institutionalized ghost of a woman was gone; in her place stood a mother whose child was in the hands of an enemy.
"She doesn't have the law," Elena said, her voice clear, sharp, and resolute. "She has paper. And paper burns."
Matteo looked at her. "What do you have, Elena?"
"When Luciana forced Dr. Vance to sign the fake death certificate at Mount Sinai," Elena said, her eyes flashing with defiance, "she didn't know I had already hidden something. The day before my cardiac crisis, when I realized Luciana was tampering with my IV bags, I took my personal safety deposit box key and slipped it into the lining of Leah’s baby book—the one kept in the master safe in the penthouse."
Matteo remembered the safe in the Blue Room. "The wainscoting safe."
"Inside that deposit box at JPMorgan Chase," Elena continued, "is an audio recording of Luciana offering me five million dollars to abandon Leah and sign over full parental rights, threatening that if I refused, she would 'make sure Matteo buried me before the autumn ended.' And there is a duplicate blood vial Dr. Vance drew before he put me under—containing toxic levels of digitoxin, the cardiac poison Luciana used to simulate my heart failure."
Matteo turned to Mara. "Did you secure the Blue Room before we left?"
"The penthouse is locked down tight," Mara answered. "Luciana’s CPS team only had access to the nursery on the first level. They never touched the east wing."
"Then we aren't going to Fifth Avenue to fight private armies," Matteo said, taking Elena’s hand and interlacing his fingers with hers, feeling the cold platinum snake ring against his skin. "We’re going to the one place where Luciana cannot control the narrative."
"Where?" Mara asked.
May you like
"The 1st Precinct of the NYPD," Matteo said. "And the press corps standing outside the Manhattan District Attorney’s office."
