Chapter 8 - The Boy in the Shadows

The revelation struck the room like a physical blow. Vanessa stumbled back another step, her face turning an ashen, sickly gray.

"Toby..." Mark choked out, reaching a trembling hand toward his son. "Buddy, no... I was trying to protect us. I was trying to keep our family together—"

"You weren't protecting us!" Toby shouted, his voice breaking into a desperate, cracking sob that tore straight through my heart. "You made me wash the rug! You made me wipe up the pink medicine with paper towels before the ambulance got there so the doctors wouldn't know you spilled it! You told me it was my fault because I asked you to fix my bike chain that afternoon and made you too tired!"

I couldn't breathe. The air in my lungs turned to pure lead. I looked at Mark, feeling the ground completely fall away beneath my feet.

"You made an eight-year-old boy clean up the evidence of your neglect?" I demanded, my voice dropping to a deadly, vibrating register. "You put the blood of your daughter on your eight-year-old son's hands so you wouldn't face manslaughter charges?!"

"I panicked!" Mark wailed, pulling his knees up to his chest like a condemned child. "I was terrified! My baby was dead, and I knew if they investigated, they’d say I was negligent! Sarah had already left us two years before—I was a single father drowning under bills, under work, under everything! If they took Toby, I had nothing left to live for!"

"So you buried him alive instead," Vanessa said, her voice chillingly quiet.

She wasn't crying anymore. The shock had solidified into a fierce, protective maternal disgust. She looked down at Mark with eyes that held no warmth, no love, only the sudden realization that she had brought her innocent five-year-old daughter into the home of a deeply damaged, manipulative stranger.

"The dress," Vanessa whispered, her jaw tightening. "The smocked floral dress you insisted I buy Lily for this party. The way you kept correcting the way she tilted her head. The hair clip... you didn't buy that in an antique store in Savannah. You took it from Rosie’s memory box, didn't you?"

Mark wouldn't look up. He kept his forehead pressed hard against his knees.

"You weren't trying to build a family with me, Mark," Vanessa said, her words landing like precise, surgical incisions. "You were trying to build a resurrection. You wanted Lily to be Rosie so you could finally forgive yourself. And you expected this poor boy to sit at the table and watch you pretend his sister never died, just so you could sleep at night."

"No, Vanessa, please," Mark begged, crawling forward on his hands and knees across the kitchen tile, reaching out for the hem of her linen trousers. "I love you. I love Lily. Please, don't leave me. I did it for us. I did it to give Toby a mother again, to give him a sister—"

"Don't you dare touch me," Vanessa hissed, recoiling from his outstretched hand as if he were venomous. "Don't you ever come near my daughter again."

She spun around, her heels clicking rapidly toward the front door. "Lily and I are leaving. If you follow us, I will call the sheriff before your tires even hit the end of the driveway."
