Chapter 6 - Ashley’s Secret (1,800 words)Two days after my visit to the county jail, I met Megan’s nineteen-year-old live-in babysitter, Ashley, at a small, quiet diner on the edge of town.

Ashley sat in a booth near the back window, clutching a warm mug of hot chocolate, her eyes nervous as she looked around the restaurant. When she saw me approach, she let out a visible sigh of relief.

“Mrs. Vance,” Ashley said, standing up to give me a quick, hesitant hug. “I’m so sorry... I’m so sorry I didn't send you that video sooner.”

“You saved my daughter, Ashley,” I said gently, taking a seat across from her. “If you hadn't sent me that video and told me about Megan’s legal filings, I would have walked right into their trap.”

Ashley took a shaky sip of her drink. “I was terrified of Megan. She threatened to fire me and kick me out without my final paycheck if I ever mentioned what went on in that house. But that night... when Evan shoved Lily and your mother locked her in the laundry room... I couldn't stay quiet anymore. It was sick.”

Ashley reached down into her canvas tote bag, pulling out a small, worn leather journal and a USB flash drive, setting them on the table between us.

“What is this?” I asked.

“When I started working for Megan six months ago,” Ashley explained, leaning closer, “I noticed she kept a locked cabinet in her home office. About a month ago, she left her keys on the kitchen counter while she was out shopping with your mother. I opened the cabinet because I was looking for my employment tax forms.”

She pushed the USB drive toward me.

“Inside that cabinet was a folder labeled Mark’s Estate,” Ashley revealed, her voice dropping into a tense whisper. “Megan and your mother didn't just start forging documents two years ago when Mark died, Mrs. Vance.”

My heart skipped a beat. “What do you mean?”

“I found audio recordings on Megan’s old phone,” Ashley said, pointing to the flash drive. “Your husband, Mark... he didn't trust your mother or sister. A month before his industrial accident, Mark discovered that Megan’s husband had been using fake invoices to embezzle money from the chemical plant’s maintenance fund.”

I stared at the flash drive in absolute shock.

Mark had been the senior safety engineer at that chemical processing plant. For months before his death, he had been stressed, staying up late reviewing maintenance logs and financial audits, but he had kept the details away from me to protect me from worry.

“Mark confronted Megan’s husband, Greg,” Ashley continued, her eyes wide with gravity. “Mark told Greg that he was going to present the forged maintenance invoices to the board of directors on Monday morning unless Greg turned himself in.”

A cold, sickening dread spread through my entire chest. “When was Mark’s industrial accident?”

“The explosion happened on Sunday night,” Ashley whispered. “The night before Mark was scheduled to turn over the evidence.”

The air felt completely crushed out of my lungs.

I sat in that diner booth, staring at the small black flash drive resting on the Formica table, realizing that the nightmare my daughter and I had been living for two years wasn't just a story of petty family greed and financial forgery.

It was a cover-up for something far more sinister.

“Did you give this to the police?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

Ashley nodded slowly. “I gave a duplicate copy to Detective Kane three hours ago.”
