Chapter 6 - The HearingCourtroom 4B was quiet, cooled by humming industrial AC vents that did nothing to take the edge off the tension in the room.

Judge Helen Vance—no relation to Ryan Vance, though her stern reputation in family court made both sides tread carefully—sat behind the dark oak bench, reviewing the emergency petition filed by Evelyn’s legal team.
Evelyn’s lead attorney, a slick corporate litigator named Donald Blake, stood up first.
"Your Honor," Blake began, his voice echoing smoothly off the wood paneling. "My client, Evelyn Bennett, is requesting emergency temporary custody of her two minor children. For months, Mr. Bennett has demonstrated escalating emotional instability, financial mismanagement, and extreme negligence. Yesterday afternoon, Mr. Bennett left his nine-year-old daughter alone to care for an infant while he was miles away training aggressive working dogs."
I felt my jaw tighten, but Marcus laid a calm, heavy hand on my arm, signaling me to stay silent.
"Mrs. Bennett was forced to leave the residence briefly due to a family crisis," Blake continued, gesturing toward Evelyn, who sat dabbling a tissue at her dry eyes. "Upon her return, Mr. Bennett verbally attacked her, confiscated her personal property, and threw her out of the marital home."
Judge Vance lowered her glasses, looking over the top frame at Blake. "And the allegation regarding the child endangerment? The petition states the nine-year-old was found exhausted on the floor?"
"A complete exaggeration constructed by Mr. Bennett to weaponize the children against their mother," Blake claimed smoothly.
Judge Vance turned her gaze toward our table. "Mr. Miller. Your response?"
Marcus stood up, adjusting his dark suit jacket. He didn't use flashy gestures. He simply picked up a black tablet from our table and walked to the podium.
"Your Honor," Marcus said calmly. "We don't need to debate opinions today. We have data, timestamps, and certified telecommunications records."
Marcus tapped the tablet, projecting a clear audio recording through the courtroom's digital media display.
Tessa’s small, trembling voice filled the room:
"Dad?... I can't hold him anymore... She told me she'd only be gone for seventeen minutes... Before lunch."
Evelyn flinched in her seat. Her attorney tried to jump up with an objection, but Judge Vance raised a sharp hand, silencing him instantly.
"That call was received at 5:12 p.m.," Marcus explained clearly. "Mrs. Bennett left the residence at 1:15 p.m. Now, as to the 'family crisis' Mrs. Bennett claimed forced her to leave her children..."
Marcus submitted Exhibit B—the complete text log from the hidden second phone, cross-referenced with GPS location data from Ryan Vance’s private vehicle, showing both of them at a luxury boutique hotel in downtown Oklahoma City between 1:45 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
"Furthermore," Marcus added, dropping a second heavy stack of documents onto the court clerk's desk, "we are submitting forensic banking audits showing Mrs. Bennett systematically transferred $82,000 from the marital estate into accounts managed by Mr. Ryan Vance—who happens to be sitting in the gallery today."
The courtroom went entirely motionless.
Judge Vance’s eyes snapped toward the gallery, locking onto Ryan Vance, who suddenly looked very uncomfortable in his charcoal jacket.
Judge Vance looked back down at Evelyn. "Mrs. Bennett. Is this second phone yours?"
Evelyn looked at her attorney, then at Vance, panic finally breaking through her composed facade. "I... Your Honor, I was manipulated—"
"Enough," Judge Vance cut her off, her voice like a steel door slamming shut.
She picked up her pen, signed three distinct documents on her desk, and struck her gavel down hard.
"Emergency petition for custody by Evelyn Bennett is DENIED," Judge Vance ruled coldly. "Temporary sole physical and legal custody of Miles and Tessa Bennett is granted immediately to Grant Bennett. A temporary restraining order is issued against Evelyn Bennett and Ryan Vance, effective immediately. Furthermore, this court is referring the financial logs and notary documents to the State District Attorney for criminal review."

CRACK.
Evelyn collapsed back into her chair, burying her face in her hands, while Ryan Vance stood up abruptly and walked out of the courtroom without looking back at her even once.
