Chapter 8 - The Red and Blue Dawn

Outside the high frosted-glass panels of the double front doors, the quiet Connecticut woodland suddenly exploded into a violent, pulsing kaleidoscope of flashing red and blue lights.
Dozens of high-intensity searchlights pierced through the glass, illuminating the foyer with blinding, surgical brilliance. The heavy rumble of multiple high-powered V8 engines shook the foundation of the house, accompanied by the sharp, authoritative chirp of tactical police sirens.
*"DANIEL MERCER!"* a thunderous, electronically amplified voice boomed from the driveway, echoing through the walls with enough force to rattle the chandelier crystals above our heads. *"THIS IS THE CONNECTICUT STATE POLICE MAJOR CRIMES DIVISION. WE HAVE AN ACTIVE EMERGENCY BENCH WARRANT FOR YOUR ARREST. DROP YOUR WEAPON, STEP AWAY FROM THE OCCUPANT, AND PLACE YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HEAD!"*
Daniel spun around toward the doors, his eyes wide with animal panic.
"No," he whimpered, his voice shrinking into a high, pathetic squeak. "No, no, no! How did they get through the gates? The code was changed!"
"Clara opened the utility service gate from the rear terrace five minutes ago," I said, stepping closer to him, cutting off his angle to the basement stairs. "And Marcus Sterling filed a federal kidnapping and corporate sabotage injunction with the Stamford district judge thirty minutes ago. You're finished, Daniel."
"Shut up!" he shrieked, whipping the gun back toward me, his hands shaking so violently that the sights wobbled across my torso. "I’ll kill you! I swear to God, Lena, I’ll take you with me!"
"Go ahead," I said, my voice steady, ice-cold, and entirely without fear. "Pull the trigger. Let thirty armed state troopers watch you murder your sister on live bodycam through those glass doors. Let’s see how many millions your defense team gets to keep after the state of Connecticut puts you on death row."
Daniel’s knuckles turned white on the grip. His jaw worked convulsively, his teeth grinding together as he looked from my unblinking eyes to the flashing emergency lights outside.
He was a predator who only knew how to attack people who were locked in dark rooms. Faced with open light, armed authority, and absolute defiance, his spine turned to water.
*"BREACHING IN THREE! TWO! ONE!"*
A concussive hydraulic boom shattered the front entrance.
The heavy mahogany double doors blew inward with a deafening crack of splintering timber and shattered deadbolts. Four tactical officers in heavy black body armor, carrying ballistic shields and carbines, stormed into the foyer in a seamless, lethal wedge formation.
"DROP THE GUN! DROP IT NOW!"
"POLICE! GET ON THE GROUND!"
Daniel let out a strangled, breathless sob. The heavy black semi-automatic slipped from his sweat-slicked fingers, clattering loudly against the marble tiles. He raised his trembling hands above his head, sinking slowly to his knees among the shattered shards of the porcelain vase.
"Don't shoot!" Daniel wept, his voice completely broken. "Don't shoot! It was a misunderstanding! It’s a family medical dispute! She’s mentally unstable!"
Two tactical officers descended on him instantly. One planted a heavy combat boot firmly between Daniel’s shoulder blades, driving him flat against the marble floor, while the other wrenched his arms behind his back, ratcheting a pair of heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists until the metal clicked tight against the bone.
"Daniel Mercer, you are under arrest for first-degree assault, attempted second-degree murder, felony kidnapping, and corporate grand larceny," an arresting officer recited with cold, mechanical efficiency, hauling Daniel upward by his elbows.
"Lena!" Daniel screamed, his face smeared with dust and tears as they dragged him toward the shattered doorway. "Tell them! Tell them I’m your brother! I raised you! You wouldn't have anything without me! Lena!"
I stood motionless under the chandelier, watching them pull him out into the cold night air.
I didn't utter a single word. I didn't offer a single tear.
A tall, broad-shouldered man in a charcoal wool overcoat stepped through the splintered entrance, flanked by two plainclothes detectives. He had silver hair at his temples, sharp gray eyes, and carried a thick leather litigation briefcase in his left hand.
Marcus Sterling looked across the ruined foyer, his eyes softening the moment they locked onto mine.
"Miss Mercer," Marcus said, his voice warm, steady, and infinitely reassuring. "I apologize for the delay. The Merritt Parkway was backed up."
A faint, tired smile touched my lips. "You’re right on time, Marcus."
"The tactical team has secured the flight cases in the study," Marcus continued, stepping beside me and draping his heavy overcoat over my shoulders to ward off the chill draft blowing through the ruined doorway. "Every single analog reel is intact. The ledger books are in federal custody. And Arthur Vance was intercepted by federal agents at Westchester County Airport twenty minutes ago attempting to board a private jet to Zurich."
I looked out through the shattered doorway into the night.
Paramedics were guiding Clara toward an ambulance, wrapping a warm shock blanket around her shoulders while she gave her statement to a female detective. Daniel was being shoved into the rear cage of a state police cruiser, his hysterical shouts finally muffled by the heavy reinforced doors.
Above the tree line, the first faint violet rays of dawn were beginning to bleed into the eastern sky.
May you like
The darkness was over.
