Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in the Foyer"Get out of my doorway, Claire," I said, my voice dropping into an octave so cold it made her pause mid-rant.

"You took Lucy without my permission!" she yelled, her chest heaving under her wet trench coat. "The school called me twenty minutes ago saying she was signed out by you! That is crossing a major legal line, Barbara!"

"The school called you three times over the course of two hours, Claire," I replied, standing my ground, blocking her from stepping further into my living room. "Your phone was turned off. Daniel’s phone was turned off. She had a fever and was sitting alone in the nurse's office. Should I have left an eight-year-old sick child on a cot because your pride was hurt?"

Claire’s mouth opened, but no sound came out for three seconds. She clutched her designer handbag tightly against her waist.

"I had an important client presentation!" she defended weakly.

"And I had a peaceful afternoon," I countered. "Which I sacrificed the moment the school called me as her designated emergency contact. I did not 'kidnap' your daughter. I cared for her when her parents were unreachable."

At that moment, Lucy walked out of the guest bedroom, holding her blanket around her shoulders.

"Mom?" Lucy whispered, her voice small. "Why are you yelling at Grandma?"

Claire froze. Her aggressive posture instantly collapsed as she looked at her daughter’s pale face and red eyes.

"Lucy, honey..." Claire stammered, stepping past me to crouch down in front of her. "Are you okay? Why didn't you tell the teacher to keep calling me?"

"Grandma took care of me," Lucy said softly, looking at her mother with a surprisingly serious expression. "She made me soup. You and Dad are always working and screaming at your phones."

The words were innocent, but they landed on Claire like a physical blow.

Claire stood up slowly, looking at her daughter, then turning to look at me. For the first time in two months, I saw genuine shame flicker across her eyes.

"She can come home now," Claire said quietly, her voice losing its razor-sharp edge. "Daniel is waiting in the car."

"She can go home when she’s ready," I said, walking over to help Lucy put her boots on. "Her fever is down, but she needs rest and hydration tonight."

I zipped Lucy’s coat, hugged her tightly, and kissed her forehead. "I love you, sweetheart. Call me on your tablet if you need anything."

"I love you, Grandma," Lucy whispered.

Claire took Lucy’s hand, walking toward the front door. She paused on the threshold, her back turned to me.

"Thank you," Claire muttered, the words barely audible. "For picking her up."

May you like

"You're welcome, Claire," I replied calmly. "Next time, keep your phone turned on."

I closed the door, locked the deadbolt, and let out a long, deep breath. The tide was turning, but I knew the final reckoning was far from over.
