Chapter 5 - The Confrontation at the HospitalBy Monday morning, the news had spread through our extended family network like wildfire. My father was resting comfortably at Mercy General Hospital after a mild stress-induced angina attack, but the financial wreckage surrounding Daniel and Rebecca could no longer be hidden behind closed doors.

Mark and I walked down the sterile hospital hallway toward room 412. As we approached, I noticed Daniel pacing furiously outside the door, his hair disheveled, his expensive designer shirt wrinkled as if he hadn't slept at all. When he saw me walking down the corridor, his face twisted into an ugly mask of rage.
“You!” Daniel hissed, lunging forward, though a hospital security guard stationed nearby immediately stepped between us. “You did this! You tipped off the authorities!”
I stopped, looking at my older brother with absolute pity. “Did what, Daniel? What are you talking about?”
“Don’t play dumb with me!” he roared, spraying spittle. “The state investigators said an anonymous whistleblower provided the exact ledger entries for the forged corporate guarantees! You’re the only one in the family with a background in military finance and compliance!”
“Even if I were, why would I destroy my own family?” I asked, tilting my head. “Unless, of course, you admit that you were committing financial fraud behind everyone’s backs.”
Daniel choked on his own breath, his face turning an alarming shade of purple. “Dad’s in that room because of you! And Rebecca... Rebecca is facing federal indictment because the bank discovered her prior embezzlement record was omitted from the corporate disclosures!”
Ah. So the hidden truth had finally come to light. Rebecca’s five-year secret—the criminal record she had managed to expunge through legal technicalities and family bribes—had resurfaced because federal investigators pulled her full financial history during the audit of Apex Builders.
“Maybe Rebecca shouldn't have struck me across the face in front of my children,” I said coldly, stepping closer so only he could hear. “Maybe you both shouldn't have spent years mocking my family, my children, and my life. You built an empire on lies, Daniel. Gravity finally caught up.”

Before Daniel could scream another curse, the hospital room door swung open, and my mother stepped out. Her eyes were red-rimmed, her face pale and drawn. She looked at Daniel, then at me, her lower lip trembling.
“Claire,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “Your father is asking for you.”
