Chapter 6 - The Federal Gambit (1,800 Words)The federal courthouse downtown stood like an imposing fortress of gray stone and towering pillars against the gray morning sky.

By 9:00 AM, Marcus and I walked up the massive stone steps, carrying the walnut box and the encrypted flash drive securely stored in a padded leather folio. Ethan was safely staying with a trusted former neighbor from our apartment complex—a kind retired teacher who had agreed to watch him for the morning while I handled “important errands.”

Security was tight at the federal checkpoint, but Marcus’s press credentials, combined with a pre-arranged emergency consultation appointment he had secured through a federal prosecutor contact, allowed us to bypass the general line and enter the secure administrative offices on the fourth floor.

We were ushered into a sleek, windowed conference room by a crisp, professional federal investigator named Agent Sarah Hayes. She wore a sharp charcoal suit, her hair pulled back neatly, and her expression was professional, analytical, and completely unimpressed by casual drama.

“Mr. Vance indicated over the phone that you have primary evidence regarding a high-level municipal corruption and homicide case dating back three years,” Agent Hayes said, sitting down at the head of the conference table and opening a blank case file. “Let’s see what you have.”

I didn't speak. I simply slid the walnut box across the table, followed by the flash drive and a printed copy of Daniel’s handwritten letter.

Agent Hayes examined the box, then plugged the flash drive into her secure agency laptop. For twenty agonizing minutes, the conference room was entirely silent, save for the rhythmic clicking of her mouse as she reviewed the financial ledgers, scanned contracts, and audio recordings.

As she clicked play on the audio file of my father and Councilman Costello threatening Daniel just days before his death, Agent Hayes’s expression hardened into a mask of absolute, unyielding stone.

She paused the recording, looked up from her screen, and stared directly at me.

“Mrs. Sinclair,” Agent Hayes said, her voice measured and precise. “Are you aware of the gravity of the files contained on this drive?”

“Yes,” I replied steadily. “My father, Richard Vance, and Councilman Frank Costello murdered my husband to cover up an infrastructure embezzlement scheme.”

Agent Hayes nodded once. “These recordings, combined with the forensic financial audit trails and forged inspection certificates, satisfy federal RICO criteria for grand-scale corruption, racketeering, and conspiracy. Furthermore, the audio file constitutes actionable probable cause for a homicide reinvestigation.”

She stood up immediately, walking over to the wall phone to issue rapid-fire operational commands.

“Dispatch a tactical warrant team to the residences and corporate headquarters of Richard Vance and Frank Costello immediately,” Agent Hayes commanded into the receiver. “Execute search and seizure warrants under seal. Bring them both in for immediate questioning. No notifications, no advanced warnings.”

My breath hitched. The machine of federal justice was finally moving.

“What happens next?” I asked, standing up from my chair.

“Next, Mrs. Sinclair, your family’s little empire comes crashing down,” Agent Hayes replied with a sharp, professional smile.
