Chapter 3 - The Morning After (1800 Words)At 5:45 a.m., the sun had not yet risen over the luxurious neighborhood of Preston Hollow. The air was crisp, cold, and quiet, save for the gentle chirp of early morning birds.

Inside the Cole mansion, Victor Cole sat at the head of his mahogany dining table, wearing a silk robe and enjoying his morning espresso. Across from him sat Daniel, looking slightly hungover but wearing a triumphant smile as he scrolled through news articles on his tablet.

“The board is going to confirm my expanded stock package by noon,” Daniel said, taking a bite of his pastry. “Once we clear out the remaining management at the East Texas plant, we’ll double our quarterly profit margins.”

Victor set his espresso cup down onto the saucer with a soft click. “And what about your brother?”

Daniel snorted softly. “I checked his bank account access through the family trust system an hour ago. I had legal freeze his monthly distribution stipend. He has less than three thousand dollars in his personal checking account. He’ll be crawling back here by Friday, begging for forgiveness.”

Patricia walked into the dining room, holding a silk scarf around her neck, looking mildly distressed. “Victor, the housekeepers say there are still mud stains near the front entrance from last night. And someone took the guest list from the hallway console table.”

“Forget the housekeepers, Patricia,” Victor dismissed her with a wave of his hand. “Ethan learned his place last night. That’s all that matters. A family like ours survives because we enforce discipline.”

Suddenly, the peaceful morning silence was shattered by a deafening boom that shook the floorboards beneath their feet.

CRASH!

The heavy, reinforced oak front doors burst inward with explosive force.

“FEDERAL AGENTS! FBI! STAY WHERE YOU ARE! HANDS IN THE AIR!”

A chorus of booming voices echoed through the high-ceilinged foyer, accompanied by the heavy thud of tactical boots pounding across the marble floor.

Patricia shrieked in horror, dropping her coffee cup onto the rug.

Daniel leaped out of his chair, his face instantly turning pale. “What the hell is going on?!”

Before Victor could even stand up from the dining table, six heavily armed FBI agents clad in black tactical gear and Kevlar vests swept into the dining room, their assault rifles raised with lethal precision.

“Victor Cole! Daniel Cole! Put your hands behind your head! Do it now!” a senior agent shouted, stepping forward with a stack of federal warrants.

“Are you insane?!” Victor roared, his face flushing dark red with outrage. “Do you know who I am?! I am the Chairman of Cole Energy! Call the Police Chief immediately! Call Mayor Roberts!”

“Mayor Roberts is currently being detained by our precinct team in Austin, Mr. Cole,” the lead agent replied coldly. “Get on your knees. Now.”

An agent grabbed Victor by the shoulder, forced him out of his silk robe, and slammed him down onto the hardwood floor, pulling his arms behind his back and clicking heavy steel handcuffs over his wrists.

“Get your hands off me!” Victor screamed, his face pressed against the floorboards. “Daniel! Call our legal counsel!”

Daniel was already pressed face-first against the dining table, an agent pinning his shoulder as handcuffs snapped over his wrists. “I’m... I’m the Regional Vice President! You can’t arrest me! On what grounds?!”

Special Agent Sarah Miller stepped calmly into the dining room, holding a leather folder. Behind her walked Ethan.

He was dressed in a sharp, tailored gray suit. His jaw was noticeably bruised and stitched, but his posture was upright, his expression completely cool and unbothered.

The moment Victor saw his younger son standing beside the federal agents, his eyes nearly bulged out of his head.

“Ethan?!” Victor gasped, his voice cracking with sheer disbelief. “You... you brought the government into my house?!”

Daniel stared at his brother, his mouth hanging open in complete shock. “Ethan... what did you do?”

Ethan stepped closer, standing right beside the dining table, looking down at his father and brother pinned to the floor like common criminals.

“I didn't bring them into your house, Dad,” Ethan said softly, his voice devoid of any anger or malice. “Your own crimes brought them here. I just gave them the key.”

Patricia stumbled forward, her voice high-pitched and hysterical. “Ethan! How could you do this to your own family?! To your father?! To your brother’s career?!”

“Where was that concern for family last night, Mom?” Ethan asked, turning his quiet gaze to her. “When Dad punched me across this room? When Daniel clapped and joked about it while sixty-eight people watched? You didn't see a family then. You saw a public embarrassment.”

“You ungrateful piece of dirt!” Victor snarled, struggling against the cuffs. “I gave you everything! I gave you a job! I gave you a name! You’re nothing without me!”

“I built the entire compliance and environmental safety infrastructure for Cole Energy, Dad,” Ethan replied smoothly. “And while I was doing that, you and Daniel were forging safety reports, dumping carcinogenic chemicals into public water tables, and laundering forty million dollars through fake equipment procurement companies.”

Special Agent Miller pulled out a document and read aloud to the room: “Victor Cole and Daniel Cole, you are under arrest for federal racketeering, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, environmental devastation under the Clean Water Act, tax evasion, and obstruction of justice.”

“This is a mistake!” Daniel screamed as an agent yanked him up to his feet. “Our legal team will have this thrown out before lunch! We have immunity clauses!”

“Your legal team can’t help you, Daniel,” Sarah Miller informed him coolly. “Because forty minutes ago, federal agents simultaneously executed search warrants on your corporate headquarters. Your Chief Financial Officer, Marcus Vance, is currently in federal custody... and he has already agreed to state's evidence in exchange for a plea deal.”

Daniel’s knees buckled. If CFO Marcus Vance was talking, there was no defense left. Vance knew every double-entry ledger, every hidden shell company, and every off-the-books bribe.

Outside the mansion, the morning light revealed a staggering sight.

Over a dozen black federal vehicles, mobile command trailers, and news vans were parked along the sweeping driveway. Neighbors stood on their manicured lawns, recording the scene on their phones in total astonishment.

The local news cameras zoomed in as Victor Cole—one of the most powerful oil tycoons in Texas—was led out of his own front door in handcuffs, dressed in his pajamas, his face twisted in desperate rage. Right behind him was Daniel, weeping openly as federal agents guided him into the back of a police van.

Ethan walked out onto the front porch, pulling a warm coat around his shoulders.

Agent Miller stepped up beside him. “The preliminary asset seizure orders have officially gone through. The court has appointed a federal receiver to liquidate Cole Energy assets to pay for environmental cleanup and victim compensation funds.”

Ethan looked at the grand mansion—the house where he had spent years trying to earn the love and respect of a father who viewed him as nothing more than a tool.

“It’s over,” Ethan said softly.

“No, Ethan,” Miller corrected with a faint smile. “For them, it’s just beginning.”
