Chapter 5 - The Red Dress

The executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor of the Ferrara Tower was enclosed in floor-to-ceiling soundproof glass, offering a panoramic view of the Hudson River. Inside, the atmosphere was suffocating.
Around the long mahogany conference table sat twelve board members, their expressions pale and frantic. At the far end stood Edmund Ashford, dressed in an immaculate charcoal Brioni suit, his hair slicked back, exuding the false confidence of a man holding what he believed was a royal flush. Beside him sat Salvatore Valenti—an older, broad-shouldered man with silver hair, cold reptilian eyes, and diamond cufflinks that caught the fluorescent lights.
Two federal agents from the SEC stood near the door, arms crossed, waiting.
“Nico Ferrara has overstepped his bounds!” Edmund was bellowing, slamming a hand against the table. “He used violent intimidation to force an unlawful marriage upon my daughter to blackmail my firm! He is mentally unstable, running this corporation like a cartel, and using Ferrara freight to launder illicit capital! We have the affidavits right here!”
“Is that so, Edmund?”
The heavy double doors swung open with a resounding thud.
The room instantly fell dead silent.
Nico walked in, tailored to perfection in a three-piece charcoal suit, radiating an aura of lethal power. But every single eye in the room immediately bypassed him and locked onto me.
I wore an off-the-shoulder, structured scarlet dress that hugged my frame with unapologetic elegance. The cut of the dress was deliberate: the neckline sat just low enough to reveal the jagged, raised silver scar that slashed across my left collarbone, trailing down toward my shoulder. My hair was swept up in an elegant chignon, exposing the delicate line of my neck and the raw evidence of my survival.
Beside me, Nico took my hand. His fingers laced through mine, firm, warm, and unbreakable.
Edmund turned white as a sheet. His breath hitched in his throat, his eyes darting frantically between my face and the exposed scar on my shoulder.
“N-Nora,” Edmund stammered, stepping forward. “Nora, sweetheart, come here. Don't be afraid. The federal authorities are here to protect you. Tell them. Tell them you were coerced into this.”
I didn't flinch. I didn't step back.
“The only person I have ever needed protection from, Edmund,” I said, my voice ringing clear and steady across the boardroom, “is you.”
Salvatore Valenti shifted in his chair, his eyes narrowing as he evaluated me. “Young lady, this is an official corporate inquiry regarding serious federal infractions. Family squabbles have no place here.”
“Then let’s talk business, Mr. Valenti,” Nico said coldly.
Nico gestured toward Lev, who stepped into the room carrying a heavy leather briefcase. Lev snapped the latches open, pulled out a thick stack of forensic accounting documents, and slammed them down in the center of the mahogany table, directly in front of the SEC agents.
“Those are the mirrored hard-drive records from Edmund Ashford’s private servers, retrieved four hours ago,” Nico announced. “Alongside forty-eight verified wire transfers routing sixty million dollars from Valenti Shipping holding companies through Ashford Capital, and attempting to slip into Ferrara shipping manifests via forged digital bills of lading.”
The SEC agents immediately stepped forward, pulling the documents toward them.
“This is a lie!” Edmund shouted, his voice cracking into panic. “These are fabrications! Forgeries created by Ferrara’s hackers!”
“Are they?” I said, stepping forward. I pulled a small, worn, blue leather-bound notebook from beneath my arm and placed it gently on the table. “Because this is my mother’s handwritten ledger from twelve years ago. It lists every single original offshore shell corporation used by Ashford Capital to launder Valenti money through the Port of Newark. The account numbers haven't changed in twelve years. Neither have the routing codes.”
Salvatore Valenti stood up so violently his chair screeched against the hardwood. His face was mottled with purple rage. He glared at Edmund Ashford with pure murder in his eyes.
“You told me that book was burned,” Valenti hissed through his teeth.
“It was!” Edmund cried, raising his trembling hands in surrender. “I swear to you, Sal, she’s bluffing! She died with that book!”
“No, Edmund,” I said, taking one slow, deliberate step toward him until I was standing inches from the man who had terrified me my entire life. “My mother died because you murdered her. But her voice didn't die with her. And neither did mine.”
The SEC agents looked up from the documents, their faces grim.
“Mr. Ashford,” the senior agent said, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. “Step away from the table and place your hands behind your back. You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit federal securities fraud, money laundering, and tampering with a federal witness.”
“No! Wait!” Edmund screamed, lunging forward, his hands clawing toward the blue ledger on the table. “You can't do this! Nora, you ungrateful little bitch! After everything I gave you! I made you!”
Before Edmund could reach the desk, Nico moved.
With blinding speed, Nico’s hand clamped around Edmund’s throat, slamming him flat against the glass wall of the boardroom with enough force to rattle the entire pane. The city of Manhattan stretched out thousands of feet below Edmund's trembling heels.

“Touch her,” Nico whispered, his voice vibrating with a deadly, quiet promise, “and I won't let the federal government have what's left of you.”
