Chapter 6 - The Crack in the ArmorThere was a long, suffocating pause on the other end of the line. For a second, I thought she had hung up. Then came the sound of a ragged, trembling breath.

“Valeria,” my mother whispered, her voice stripped of its usual haughty veneer. Gone was the sharp, venomous matriarch who had spat on my hospital bed. In her place sounded a terrified, exhausted woman drowning in the consequences of her own choices. “Where are you? Are you safe?”
“Safe?” I let out a dry, humorless laugh. “Mother, you watched me wake up in a hospital room with a fractured skull, and you spat in my face. You don't get to ask if I’m safe now.”
“I had to!” she sobbed, the emotional dam finally breaking. “You don't understand what your father is capable of, Valeria! When he came home from that trip and found out what you’d recorded… when he realized you had proof of the affair… he went insane. He threatened to cut us off entirely, to strip the house away, to leave me with nothing if I didn't help him manage the fallout.”
“So you helped him cover up attempted murder?” My voice rose, sharp as glass. “You watched him leave me for dead on a cold garage floor, and you played the grieving, loyal wife?”
“He told me you tripped!” she cried out defensively, though the lie sounded pathetic even to her own ears. “He said you came over unannounced, argued with him in the garage, slipped on a grease spill, and hit your head! He swore he didn't touch you!”
“And you believed him?” I demanded. “Or did you just want to believe him because the alternative meant admitting your entire life was built on a foundation of sand?”
Silence stretched across the line again, heavier and more suffocating than before. She couldn't answer. Because deep down, she had always known who Julian Santos really was. She had just chosen comfort over truth, status over her own flesh and blood.
“Listen to me very carefully, Mother,” I said, lowering my voice into a cold, measured register. “The police have the hospital records. The regional newspapers have the motel footage and the financial audits. Your golden-boy husband’s empire is about to collapse into dust. If you want any chance of saving yourself from being indicted as an accessory after the fact, you’re going to walk into Detective Cole’s office this afternoon and tell him the absolute, unvarnished truth about what happened in that garage.”
“I can’t,” she whimpered, terror gripping her words. “Julian will destroy me. He has accounts offshore, documents, leverage—he’ll ruin my life!”

“He already ruined mine,” I replied. “Choose wisely, Mother. You have until sundown.”
I hung up the phone before she could answer, cutting the connection with a sharp tap against the screen. My hands were shaking, but for the first time in weeks, my chest felt light. The offensive had begun.
