Chapter 3 - The Morning Papers

The Sunday morning sun rose over Manhattan in a brilliant, crisp wash of gold, but inside the penthouse of the St. Regis Hotel, the atmosphere was rancid with panic.

Chloe Vance—now officially Chloe Kensington—sat on the edge of the unmade king-sized bed, still wearing her silk bridal robe. Her mascara was smeared across her cheeks in dark, jagged tracks, and the floor was littered with crumpled tissues, half-empty champagne glasses, and discarded wedding favors.

Across the suite, Mark Kensington was pacing back and forth like a caged beast, a crystal tumbler of scotch shaking violently in his grip. His tuxedo shirt was unbuttoned to his navel, soaked with nervous sweat.

His phone was ringing continuously on the glass coffee table.

*David Cole – Chief Financial Officer.*

*Marcus Brody – Lead Investor.*

*Arthur Sterling Legal Group.*

"Answer it!" Chloe shrieked, her voice shrill and cracked from hours of crying. "Mark, answer the damn phone! You have to talk to them! Tell them it was a misunderstanding!"

Mark whirled on her, his eyes wild and bloodshot. "A misunderstanding? Are you out of your mind, Chloe? I called Alexander Sterling’s wife a broke beggar and laughed while she sat in a puddle! In front of three hundred people! Half of whom sit on my executive board!"

"How was I supposed to know she was married to him?" Chloe screamed back, clutching her head in her hands. "Nora lives in some drafty walk-up in Brooklyn! She wears clothes from discount racks! She drives a ten-year-old hatchback! She never said a word about dating anyone, let alone a billionaire!"

"Well, she did!" Mark roared, slamming his glass down on the marble console with such force that the base cracked. "And now Sterling Global just pulled their tender offer! Look at Bloomberg! Look at the pre-market alerts!"

He grabbed his tablet from the nightstand and shoved the illuminated screen into Chloe’s face.

The headline was already trending at the top of the financial feeds:

**BREAKING: STERLING GLOBAL ABANDONS $180M ACQUISITION OF KENSINGTON LOGISTICS CITING 'ETHICAL IRREGULARITIES'; BOARD CALLS EMERGENCY LIQUIDATION SESSION.**

Below the headline was a brief, devastating quote from Sterling Global’s corporate communications office:

*'Sterling Global maintains zero tolerance for corporate leadership that demonstrates abusive conduct, moral bankruptcy, or disregard for human safety. Effective immediately, all capital allocations toward Kensington Logistics have ceased.'*

"My board is calling an emergency vote at nine o'clock," Mark whispered, his voice cracking into sheer terror. "They're going to strip my shares. The commercial loans we took out to bridge the gap until the buyout? They're callable on demand if the merger falls through. Chloe... I’m personally leveraged for forty million dollars."

The suite door suddenly swung open with an authoritative click.

Richard and Irina Vance hurried in, looking haggard, disheveled, and decades older than they had appeared the previous afternoon under the courtyard lights. Richard was clutching his chest with one hand, his tie undone, while Irina frantically tapped away on her designer smartphone.

"Mark!" Richard gasped, his breath coming in wheezing rattles. "Tell me you've reached him. Tell me you spoke to Sterling’s people."

Mark stared at his new father-in-law with pure, unadulterated hatred.

"Spoke to him?" Mark laughed bitterly, a sound bordering on mania. "Alexander Sterling’s legal team just served my corporate counsel with a notice of immediate breach. And do you know what else arrived at my personal email fifteen minutes ago, Richard?"

Richard flinched. "What?"

"A formal criminal referral from the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office for assault and battery of a minor!" Mark shouted, stepping right into Richard’s face. "Because *you* couldn't keep your hands to yourself! *You* shoved his four-year-old kid into that fountain! You did this!"

"She's my daughter!" Richard snarled, his defensive arrogance flaring up despite the terror in his eyes. "Nora is my daughter! I had every right to discipline her when she embarrassed this family! She wouldn't dare let her husband press charges against her own father! It's an empty threat! A corporate intimidation tactic!"

"Is it?"

Irina’s voice was hollow. She held up her phone, her fingers trembling so badly she nearly dropped it.

"Look at the society blogs," she whispered, her face pale as ash. "Look at the Hampton Insider."

Mark snatched the phone from her hand.

Spread across the front page was a high-resolution, crystal-clear still frame taken directly from the courtyard’s surveillance cameras. It showed Richard Vance’s hands planted firmly on Nora’s chest, shoving her backward. It showed Lily mid-air, clutching her mother’s dress in absolute terror.

And beneath it was a second image: Mark Kensington raising his champagne glass, smirking down at the water.

The article had already been shared over fifty thousand times across social media. The headline read:

**NEW MONEY, OLD CRUELTY: KENSINGTON WEDDING ERUPTS INTO VIOLENCE AS GROOM AND FATHER-IN-LAW ATTACK WOMAN AND TODDLER; TECH TYCOON ALEXANDER STERLING REVEALS SECRET MARRIAGE IN DRAMATIC RESCUE.**

The comments section was an avalanche of disgust:

*— 'Boycott Kensington Logistics immediately. Disgusting bullies.'*

*— 'Who pushes a four-year-old into a fountain? Throw that old man in prison!'*

*— 'Look at the groom laughing. Complete sociopath. Sterling did the right thing pulling out.'*

*— 'Alexander Sterling stepping into the water in a bespoke suit to save his wife and kid? Absolute king behavior.'*

"We're ruined," Chloe sobbed, dropping to her knees on the plush carpet. "The vendors... the photographers... my friends are texting me asking if it's true. Amanda and Caroline just canceled our brunch! They uninvited me from the Hamptons polo match!"

"To hell with your polo match!" Mark screamed at his bride. "My company is facing bankruptcy by noon! Your father's firm is the primary contractor on our Newark hub! When my firm freezes, Richard, your invoices will bounce! You won't be able to make payroll next Friday!"

Richard staggered back, gripping the edge of the dresser for support. "No... no, Vance Construction has lines of credit with Chase—"

"Not anymore they don't," Mark sneered, showing his teeth. "Sterling sits on the advisory board of the regional banking consortium. If he whispers the word 'insolvent,' every bank in the tri-state area will freeze your operational accounts before lunch!"

Irina grabbed Richard’s arm, her voice rising in a panicked shriek. "Richard, do something! Call her! Call Nora! She has always been a soft-hearted girl. She used to forgive you every time you yelled at her! Offer her money! Beg her!"

"I told you, her phone is off!" Richard shouted, his face turning an alarming shade of purple. "She isn't answering!"

"Then we go to her," Irina demanded, her eyes flashing with desperate resolve. "She has that small restoration studio in Soho. The lease is under her name. We go there right now, we bring Chloe, and we make her understand what she is doing to this family!"

Mark looked at the three of them with utter disgust. "If you don't get Alexander Sterling to back off by five o'clock today, Chloe, don't bother coming back to our apartment. I’ll have your bags thrown onto the street."

Chloe looked up, horrified. "Mark, we got married yesterday! We took vows!"

May you like

"And yesterday you told me your sister was a nobody who couldn't hurt us," Mark snarled, grabbing his jacket from the chair. "Turns out she was the only person in your entire pathetic family who actually mattered."
