Chapter 7 - The Thirty-Day Delusion Collapses

Stripped of the penthouse, Adrian and Celeste were forced to retreat to a suite at the Omni William Penn Hotel.

The public humiliation was immediate and devastating. In high-society circles, news travels faster than market trades. By Saturday evening, every country club locker room, private dining lounge, and executive boardroom in western Pennsylvania was buzzing with the story: Nora Keating had evicted her cheating fiancé and his corporate consultant mistress under armed sheriff’s escort.

At 11:30 PM on Saturday night, my hotel phone rang.

It was Adrian.

I placed the call on speaker, gesturing to Julian and Tessa, who were sitting across from me reviewing the final proxy audit. Julian immediately tapped a key to record the audio line.

“Nora,” Adrian’s voice came through, sounding frayed, desperate, and slurred by heavy drinking. “Nora, please. We need to talk like rational human beings.”

“You have five minutes, Adrian. Make it count.”

“This whole thing... it’s gotten completely out of control,” he stammered, breathing heavily into the receiver. “Celeste... she pressured me. She was pushing the Northstar timeline. I only wanted to protect you from the financial stress!”

Tessa rolled her eyes toward the ceiling. Julian silently mimed gagging into a wastebasket.

“You forged my name, Adrian,” I said, keeping my tone perfectly conversational. “You accessed my private safe while I was sleeping five hundred miles away.”

“It wasn't a forgery! It was an administrative placeholder!” he pleaded, his voice cracking. “Nora, baby, listen to me. We’ve been together nine years! Nine years! You’re going to throw away our entire life over a procedural technicality and a stupid, meaningless infatuation?”

“Is that what Celeste is?” I asked softly. “A stupid, meaningless infatuation?”

There was a sudden, muffled sound on the other end of the line—the sound of a door slamming, followed by Celeste’s sharp, shrill voice in the background: *“What did you just call me, Adrian?!”*

Adrian had forgotten to mute his microphone.

*“Get out of the room, Celeste!”* Adrian yelled back, his voice distant. *“I’m trying to fix the disaster you created!”*

*“The disaster I created?!”* Celeste shrieked, her sweet, fragile persona completely vanishing into the screech of an enraged predator. *“You promised me twenty million from the offshore carve-out! You told me the old woman was completely under your thumb! You told me she was so desperate to get married she’d sign whatever you put in front of her!”*

*“Shut up!”* Adrian roared. *“Shut your mouth, she can hear you!”*

A violent scuffle echoed over the receiver, followed by the sound of glass shattering against a wall.

Then Adrian came back to the phone, his breathing ragged. “Nora? Nora, are you there?”

“I’m here, Adrian,” I said, smiling at Julian as he saved the high-definition audio file to two separate encrypted hard drives. “And I heard every single word.”

“Nora, wait, that wasn't what it sounded like—”

“Thirty days, Adrian,” I interrupted him, quoting his own words back to him with icy precision. “You wanted thirty days to play husband. It’s only been three days, and your happy home seems to be falling apart.”

“Nora, if you kill this merger, Northstar will sue us into oblivion! They’ll destroy the company!”

“Northstar won't touch this company after Monday morning,” I replied calmly. “Because by Monday afternoon, the federal regulatory authorities will be opening an investigation into Northstar’s corporate bribery protocols.”

“You wouldn't dare...” Adrian gasped, the reality of his prison risk finally piercing his alcohol-soaked arrogance. “You’d destroy your own family’s name?”

“My family’s name is Keating,” I said with finality. “Whitlock was just a temporary stain on the letterhead.”

I hung up the phone.

Julian looked up from his monitor, his eyes wide with satisfaction. “We have him on wire fraud, corporate conspiracy, and attempted extortion. It’s an open-and-shut case.”

May you like

“Save the audio, Julian,” I said, standing up and straightening my silk blouse. “I want Leonard Hayes and the rest of the board to hear Adrian’s romantic confession right before they cast their votes.”
