Chapter 7 - The Ambush at St. Jude’s

The rain had turned into a thick, low-crawling fog by the time Julian’s black Range Rover rolled silently down the gravel approach of St. Jude’s.

Behind him, with its headlights extinguished, crept Dr. Thorne’s white Mercedes Sprinter van.

Inside the vestry of the old stone church, there were no weeping mothers. There were no crying infants wrapped in soiled blankets.

There was only a battery-powered baby monitor resting on an overturned wooden pew, broadcasting the looped audio of an infant’s soft, rhythmic breathing and a woman’s quiet, muffled weeping.

The heavy oak vestry door creaked open.

Julian stepped in first, a high-intensity tactical flashlight cutting through the dust motes and shadows of the derelict sanctuary. Behind him came Dr. Aris Thorne, wearing a dark wool overcoat over his medical scrubs, carrying a black leather medical kit. Behind Thorne were two burly men in nondescript civilian clothes—private security guards hired from a firm specializing in discreet executive extractions.

"Clara?" Julian called out, his voice dripping with venomous triumph. "Come out, darling. The game’s over."

The flashlight beam landed on the pew. The baby monitor sat alone on the rotting wood, its little green LED light glowing in the darkness.

Julian froze.

*“Julian... please don't yell at me...”* the monitor crackled, playing back my recorded voice from two hours ago. *“My head hurts so bad...”*

"What the hell is this?" Julian snarled, taking two quick strides forward and smashing the monitor with the heavy metal heel of his flashlight. The plastic shattered across the flagstones. "Where is she?!"

"Julian," Dr. Thorne whispered, suddenly freezing in his tracks. His medical instincts had caught something Julian’s rage had blinded him to. "Look at the floor."

The dust on the ancient stone floor hadn't been disturbed by a woman’s bare feet or an infant’s blankets.

It was covered in the heavy, waffle-patterned tread marks of tactical combat boots.

Before Julian could turn, the stained-glass windows along the nave exploded inward with a deafening, concussive roar.

Four blinding red laser dots converged on the center of Julian’s chest.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! NOBODY MOVE! HANDS WHERE I CAN SEE THEM!"

The darkness of the church was instantly obliterated by twelve-hundred-lumen weapon lights mounted on the assault carbines of eight FBI tactical operators swarming from behind the altar, the confessional booths, and the choir loft.

"Down on the floor! Down on the goddamn floor right now!"

Dr. Thorne didn't hesitate. He dropped his leather medical bag, hit his knees, and threw his hands behind his head with the speed of a man who had known this day was coming for three months. The two private orderlies froze, then slowly sank to the flagstones with their fingers interlocked over their skulls.

Only Julian stood petrified, the tactical flashlight still clutched in his hand, his eyes wide and wild like a cornered wolf in the glare of the blinding tactical beams.

"Do you know who I am?!" Julian screamed, his voice cracking into a high, shrill screech. "I am Julian Sterling! My wife is an escaped lunatic! She’s kidnapped my son! What the fuck are you doing?!"

A tall man in a charcoal suit and a blue Department of Justice windbreaker stepped forward from behind the collapsed pulpit, completely unimpressed by the family name.

"Mr. Sterling," Special Agent Vance Miller said, holding up a laminated federal warrant. "United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. We have a warrant for your arrest on conspiracy to commit wire fraud, interstate transportation of illicit pharmaceutical compounds, and witness tampering."

"This is bullshit!" Julian lunged forward, but two operators slammed him into the stone floor before he could take half a step. His face hit the dust with a wet, brutal crack—the exact same sound my face had made against his mother’s tile twenty-four hours earlier.

"You have nothing!" Julian yelled into the dirt, spitting blood and stone grit. "My mother has the best attorneys on the eastern seaboard! I’ll be out of processing before sunrise! Where is she?! Where is Clara?!"

Agent Miller knelt down beside Julian’s pinned head, his voice quiet, calm, and utterly devastating.

"Your mother is currently being served with a search warrant at Sterling Manor, Mr. Sterling. And as for your wife... Mrs. Vance-Sterling is currently in a federal safehouse in Boston, signing the formal revocation of your marital power of attorney."

Miller tapped the cuff on Julian’s wrist with his pen.

"Monday morning is going to be very interesting for you, Julian. But you won't be in probate court. You'll be in a federal magistrate’s detention hearing."
