Chapter 4 - Breaking the ChainThe drive to my sister Chloe’s apartment in the city felt like waking up from a thirty-year coma.

As the autumn landscape rolled past the passenger window of the taxi, every tree, every billboard, and every passing car looked sharper, more vibrant, more real than anything I had experienced while living under the crushing thumb of the Kensington household.
When I stepped out of the cab in front of Chloe’s brownstone building, the heavy oak front door flew open before I even reached the bottom step.
Chloe rushed down the concrete steps, her face etched with a frantic mix of terror and relief. Without saying a word, she threw her arms around my neck and pulled me into an embrace so tight I could barely breathe.
“Oh, God, Maddie! When the police called me... when they told me what happened...” Chloe choked out, tears spilling over her eyelashes as she buried her face in my shoulder. “I was so scared I was going to lose you.”
“I’m okay, Chloe. I’m really okay,” I whispered, holding onto her just as tightly.
Once we got inside her warm, sunlit apartment—a cozy space filled with colorful art, green plants, and the comforting scent of vanilla candles—Chloe made me sit on the plush velvet sofa while she made a pot of chamomile tea.She sat beside me, gently examining the fading purple bruise on my shoulder and the scraped skin on my knees.
“I knew something was wrong,” Chloe said, her voice shaking with suppressed anger. “Every time I called you, you sounded distant. Whenever I asked to come visit, Aaron always made up some excuse about you being sick or needing rest. And that monster of a mother-in-law of yours... she practically hissed down the phone at me whenever she answered.”
“They kept me isolated on purpose,” I explained, wrapping my hands around the warm ceramic mug of tea. “It’s a classic control tactic. They make you doubt your own sanity so thoroughly that when things get violent, you start believing that somehow you brought it on yourself.”
“Well, not anymore,” Chloe declared fiercely, her eyes flashing with determination. “Their little reign of terror is finished. What happens next?”
“Detective Vance said the prosecutor is filing formal felony charges of domestic assault, false imprisonment, and battery against Aaron,” I replied, looking out the large bay window toward the bustling city street below. “And Patricia is facing felony charges as an accessory and co-conspirator. They’re both being held without bail because of their flight risk and the severity of the documented abuse.”
Chloe let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief. “Good. They deserve every single day behind bars. But Maddie... what about you? What about your life, your home, your finances?”

I took a slow sip of the tea, feeling the warmth spread through my chest.
“I’m going to divorce him,” I said, every word firm and absolute. “I’m going to strip away every last penny of the Kensington family money that Aaron thinks makes him a god. I have three weeks of high-definition video evidence showing not just physical abuse, but systematic financial sabotage and extortion. Their family empire is built on glass, Chloe. And I’m going to throw the first stone.”
