Chapter 5 - The Ambush (1,800 words)Three weeks passed.

With Evelyn’s help, I secured a lease on a charming, two-bedroom apartment near the coast, far away from the Whitlock family’s suburban neighborhood. I hired movers to quietly retrieve my personal belongings from the house while Grant was at work under the supervision of a court-appointed sheriff.

The legal freeze on our joint accounts went into effect immediately. When Grant realized his debit card was declined at a local restaurant during a business lunch, he panicked. He tried calling me from different burn numbers, but Evelyn’s office handled every single communication.

However, Darlene Whitlock was not a woman who accepted defeat easily.

It was a sunny Tuesday morning. I was twenty-six weeks pregnant, walking out of my OB-GYN clinic after a routine checkup. The doctor had confirmed that little Nora was growing healthy, strong, and right on schedule.

As I stepped into the clinic parking lot, holding a fresh ultrasound printout showing Nora’s tiny, perfect profile, a black SUV pulled up sharply into the lane behind my parked car, blocking me in.

The door swung open.

Darlene stepped out, wearing designer sunglasses and a tight, defensive posture. Behind her stepped Grant, looking exhausted, gaunt, and disheveled. He had lost weight, his shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, and dark circles shadowed his eyes.

My heart surged into my throat, but I forced myself to stay standing tall. I clutched my purse tightly and pulled out my phone, immediately tapping the record button.

“Maren,” Darlene called out, marching toward me across the asphalt like a tactical commander. “You need to stop this childish game right now.”

“Stay back, Darlene,” I said firmly, holding up my hand. “I am recording this interaction. You are blocking my vehicle.”

Grant stepped forward, looking desperate. “Maren, please! Just shut off the phone for five minutes! We’ve been driving around for two weeks trying to find out where you’re staying!”

“How did you know I was at this clinic, Grant?” I asked, my voice deadly quiet.

Grant looked away guiltily. Darlene sneered. “It doesn't matter how we found you. You are carrying my granddaughter! You have no right to cut Grant out of his child's life!”

“Grant cut himself out when he stole $35,000 from our family to pay off illegal gambling debts,” I said loudly, ensuring other patients walking in the parking lot heard every word.

Darlene’s face turned bright purple. “That was a mistake! Grant made a mistake, and as his family, we fixed it! We paid off his debts!”

“You didn't fix anything, Darlene,” I countered smoothly. “You tried to purchase custody of my child in exchange for covering his tracks. That’s not family—that’s extortion.”

“You crazy, ungrateful little bitch!” Darlene screamed, taking a step closer, raising her hand angrily. “I built a nursery for that baby! I bought $12,000 worth of furniture! I bought the sign! Her name is DARLENE!”

“Don't you dare touch her!” a sharp voice shouted from across the parking lot.

We all turned.

Paige was sprinting toward us from her car. She had followed Darlene and Grant after realizing they had tracked my medical appointment calendar through Grant’s old insurance records.

“Mom, step back!” Paige yelled, placing herself directly between Darlene and me. “Are you out of your mind? She’s six months pregnant!”

“Paige! Get out of the way!” Darlene shrieked. “She is destroying your brother’s life!”

“Grant destroyed his own life!” Paige yelled back, her voice ringing across the lot. “He gambled away their mortgage money! He lied to Maren for a year! And you enabled him so you could steal her baby!”

Grant looked like he wanted to break down and cry right there on the pavement. “Paige... please, don't...”

“No, Grant!” Paige cried, turning to her brother with absolute disgust. “You are a thirty-two-year-old man letting Mom ruin your marriage because you’re too cowardly to face your own mistakes! Look at Maren! She’s doing this alone because you couldn't be a husband!”

Darlene reached out and grabbed Paige’s arm roughly. “You side with this outsider over your own blood?”

Paige snatched her arm back. “Maren isn't an outsider! She was your daughter-in-law! And that baby isn't your second chance at being a mother, Mom! She’s Maren’s daughter!”

Darlene stood frozen, gasping like a fish out of water, shocked that her own daughter was openly defying her in public.

I looked at Grant one last time. “The divorce papers were served to your office this morning, Grant. If you or your mother ever follow me to a medical appointment again, my attorney will file criminal stalking charges against both of you before the sun sets.”

Grant looked at me, tears finally spilling down his cheeks. “Maren... please... I love you...”

“If you loved me, Grant, you would have protected me from her,” I said quietly. “Instead, you sold me out.”

I got into my car, locked the doors, and started the engine. Paige stood behind Darlene, waving at me with a tearful smile, giving me a thumbs-up.

As I backed out and drove away, I looked in my rearview mirror. Darlene was screaming at Paige in the middle of the parking lot, while Grant sat on the curb with his head in his hands, completely broken.

I placed my hand on my belly. Nora moved softly inside.

“We’re almost home, sweet girl,” I whispered. “We’re almost home.”
