Chapter 9 - The FalloutSix months later.

London in the spring was breathtaking. From the floor-to-ceiling windows of my new penthouse apartment in Kensington, I could see the lush green canopies of Hyde Park stretching out beneath a crisp, clear blue sky.

I sat at my glass dining table, enjoying a cup of Earl Grey tea while my laptop ran a quarterly financial review for my European operations.

My phone chimed with an email notification from my old college friend, Sarah, who still lived in Dallas.

Subject: You won't believe this update...

I opened the attachment. It was a link to a local Dallas news article, accompanied by several screenshots from social media.

After the eviction, Eric’s marketing firm had completely collapsed under the weight of the forensic audit. His major clients, horrified by the public scandal and financial improprieties, canceled their contracts within weeks. Unable to pay the rent on his office or his luxury pickup truck, he had been forced to liquidate his business assets at auction.

He was currently living in a two-bedroom rented apartment on the outskirts of the city—sharing it with his mother, Diane, who complained bitterly about her knees and the cheap carpets every single day.

Madison had given birth to a baby boy four months ago. But the fairytale ending she had envisioned had evaporated into harsh reality. Without my money to fund her lifestyle, she and Eric fought constantly over child support, diapers, and rent payments. Two weeks ago, she had packed her bags, taken the baby, and moved back to her parents’ house in Ohio, leaving Eric with a massive stack of unpaid medical bills.

I folded my laptop shut.

There was no joy in reading about their downfall—only a deep, quiet sense of order restored. They had built their foundation on greed, arrogance, and cruelty, and when the storm came, their house of cards had simply blown away in the wind.

I walked over to the window, watching the black cabs and double-decker buses navigate the elegant streets below. My phone buzzed with a calendar reminder:

I smiled, picked up my keys, and walked out the door.
