Chapter 5 - The Dismantling of Mercer HomesBy the following Monday, the transition of corporate assets was finalized with surgical precision.

Mercer Custom Homes was formally dissolved, its remaining heavy equipment, active client contracts, and inventory absorbed directly into Vance Holdings. The company my father had built and I had inherited was now safely insulated, while Ryan’s personal liabilities were cordoned off into a separate corporate shell that federal prosecutors were actively dismantling.

Ryan had moved back into his mother’s cramped suburban townhouse, his credit cards maxed out, his car repossessed by the bank, and his social circle reduced to zero as former friends and business associates distanced themselves from the unfolding scandal.

Diane spent her days drafting furious, unhinged emails to Rebecca’s office demanding a renegotiation, all of which went straight into the spam folder without being opened.

As for me, I spent that Monday afternoon standing on the second-floor balcony of my father’s downtown commercial building—one of the properties Ryan had planned to use as collateral to bail out his failing empire. The sun was warm, the sky was a brilliant, cloudless blue, and the hum of the city below felt alive with possibility.

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

It was a text message from an unknown number, though I recognized the aggressive, frantic formatting instantly.

From Ryan:“Claire, please. Can we talk? Just coffee. I have nothing left. Mom is sick with stress, and I’m facing prison time. You can’t be this cruel. We had good times. Remember the trip to Chicago?”

I stared at the screen for three seconds.

Then, with a calm, deliberate motion, I tapped the screen: Block Contact. Delete Message.

I locked my phone, slipped it back into my blazer pocket, and raised my coffee cup in a silent toast to the empty air.

The nightmare was over. The trap they had built for me had become their own prison. And as I looked out over the skyline of Cincinnati, I knew that whatever chapter came next in my life, I would write every single word myself.
