Chapter 8 - The Ocean Cottage(Length: ~1800 words)

One year later.
The crisp salty breeze swept across the grassy dunes, carrying the soothing sound of ocean waves crashing gently onto the sandy shore.
I stood on the wide wooden porch of my oceanfront cottage, painting a watercolor canvas on an easel set up under the morning sun. The cottage was painted a bright, warm cream with teal shutters, surrounded by gardens of yellow sunflowers and pink hydrangeas.
Inside the open kitchen, Sarah was preparing fresh lemonade while chatting with my oncologist, Dr. Chen, who had come over for our weekend celebration lunch.
I stepped back from my easel, admiring the painting: a vibrant sunrise breaking over a calm ocean horizon.
My phone chimed on the small side table. It was an email notification from my medical portal at the University Cancer Center.
I opened the attachment. It contained the formal results of my comprehensive full-body PET scan performed three days prior.
My eyes scanned down the page to the final diagnostic summary line written in bold text by the chief radiologist:
DIAGNOSTIC CONCLUSION: COMPLETE REMISSION. NO EVIDENCE OF ACTIVE MALIGNANCY DETECTED.
I stared at the words for a long moment, my breath catching in my chest before a massive, joyful laugh burst from my lips.
"Sarah! Dr. Chen!" I called out, my voice filled with pure, ecstatic happiness. "Come out here!"
Sarah and Dr. Chen rushed out onto the porch.
I held up my phone screen, showing them the scan report.
Sarah let out a joyous scream, throwing her arms around my neck in a tight, spin-around hug, while Dr. Chen clapped her hands with deep, emotional pride.
"Complete remission, Elena!" Dr. Chen cheered, tears twinkling in her eyes. "I always knew your spirit was stronger than the disease. Once we got you into a safe, loving environment, your body did the rest!"
Just then, a sleek black sedan pulled up the gravel driveway. Marcus Thorne stepped out, wearing a sun hat and carrying a wrapped bottle of sparkling cider and a thick leather envelope.
"What's all the cheering about out here?" Marcus called out with a warm smile as he walked up the porch steps.
"Complete remission, Marcus!" I cheered, hugging him tightly.
"That is the greatest news I have heard in my forty years of practicing law," Marcus beamed, wiping a stray tear from his eye. He handed me the leather envelope. "And to top off this perfect day, I brought the final legal closure documents."

I opened the envelope. Inside was the final court decree confirming that all civil forfeitures were completed, Donald’s appeals had been permanently rejected by the State Supreme Court, and my estate, trust, and future were completely, unchallengeably secure.
"You are free, Elena," Marcus said softly. "Completely, totally free."
