Chapter 4 - The Porch Encounter

The camera footage on my phone was grainy, but the silhouette was unmistakable.
Arthur paced back and forth across my wooden deck, the metal pry bar swinging loosely by his knee. Eleanor stood by the railing, frantically tapping away at her phone, her expensive cashmere cardigan pulled tight against the late-night chill.
"Clara! Open this door right now!" Eleanor’s voice crackled through the tiny phone speaker. "We know you’re in there! Stop this ridiculous game! You’re humiliating this family!"
Beside me in the passenger seat of Marcus’s truck, the detective leaned over to look at the screen. His eyes darkened instantly.
"Dispatch, this is Unit 404," Marcus spoke into his radio without hesitation, his voice dropping into professional ice. "I need an immediate response to 742 Elmwood Ridge. Attempted burglary and trespass in progress. Suspect is armed with a pry bar. Arthur Hayes."
"He’s losing his mind," I breathed, my hands shaking as I watched the screen.
On the feed, Arthur suddenly stepped forward and drove the sole of his heavy boot into my front door. The wood splintered with a sharp, sickening crack.
"She took the flash drive, Mom!" Arthur bellowed, his face red and distorted in the fish-eye lens. "I know she took the files from Dad’s office! If she gives them to the DA, I’m done! You told me you took care of it!"
Eleanor grabbed his arm, looking nervously over her shoulder down the dark suburban street. "Keep your voice down! Frank is calling the district attorney right now. He’ll handle it. Clara is just bluffing! She wouldn't dare destroy her own brother!"
"She left the party, Eleanor!" Arthur screamed, shoving his mother’s hand away. "She looked at me like I was a monster! I’m going inside to get that drive!"
He raised the crowbar, aiming it directly at the deadbolt.
Suddenly, blue and red lights washed across the cedar siding of my house.
Two county patrol cruisers slid to a halt at the curb, their sirens chirping once to break the stillness of the midnight air.
"County Sheriff! Step away from the door! Drop the weapon!"
Through the camera, I saw the absolute terror register on Eleanor's face. She froze, her mouth dropping open in genuine disbelief. Arthur swung around, holding the crowbar up like a club before one of the deputies unholstered his taser.
"Drop it! Now!"
Arthur hesitated for three agonizing seconds before letting the metal bar clatter against the concrete steps. Within seconds, two deputies had forced him face-down against my front porch, wrenching his arms behind his back.
"What are you doing?!" Eleanor shrieked, clawing at the nearest deputy’s sleeve. "Do you know who we are?! That is my son! He owns this property!"
"Ma'am, step back or you will be arrested for obstruction!" the officer warned sternly.
"He does *not* own the property," I said quietly, speaking into the two-way speaker on the Ring camera.
My voice echoed through the porch microphone, startling Eleanor so badly she nearly tripped over the steps.
"The deed is in my name, Mother," I continued, cold and clear. "You gave Arthur everything else, but David bought this house for me before he died. You are trespassing. And Arthur is committing aggravated trespass while armed."
Eleanor lunged toward the camera, her face grotesque with fury. "Clara! Tell them to let him go! Tell them it's a family misunderstanding! You spiteful little traitor, tell them!"

"Take him in," I told the deputy through the speaker. "I want to press every single charge the law allows."
